I have a weird problem. When i start a fullscreen game it will crash as such changing the desktop size and my mouse won't move. I have to hit ctrl+alt+backspace to get back to the login screen. also recently the login screen is having the same weird desktop size thing, but when i login in everything is fine. It was been like this since i changed the graphic driver (don't know about the games though, i just installed ubuntu last weekend). The thing is though that i changed the driver back and it changed the desktop thing back, but not the login screen. Any suggestions? Because i really want to play some games on ubuntu rather then installing them on XP (dual booting (using ubuntu about 93% of the time)). Please HELP!! please.....
PS: by weird desktop size i mean it doesn't use all of my monitor.

What graphics card / driver do you use?

i have a ATI radeon 9600. and the driver in "screen and graphic preferences" is ati - ATI Mach8, Mach32, Mach64, and Rage. also in the graphic card tab of "screen and graphic preferences" above the driver thing it says (ATI Radeon (fglrx)).

i found turning off desktop effects fixed the games crashing. my Login screen is still at a weird size though.

Try selecting "Choose driver by name" and select "radeon - ATI Radeon cards, including Radeon Mobility and FireGL". That's what I use on my 7500.
Edit: Oh and get Compiz-Switch. It's this button thing that you just click and it toggles desktop effects on/off. I disable them before playing games. Linky: http://forlong.blogage.de/article/2008/1/6/Compiz-Switch---an-easy-way-to-switch-Compiz-off-and-on#

well i did pick that driver before. And that is when i started having problems with the screen size. So i went back to ati - ATI Mach8, Mach32, Mach64, and Rage. After that the screen size thing didn't effect my normal desktop, but it still does on the login screen and the first screen when i start my computer up.
Oh and thanks for the compiz-switch. It is really useful. now i don't have to go so far. thanks.

hmm.... somehow i fixed the login screen thing by unplugging everything for a storm that just went through here, and afterwards i plugged everything back in and the login screen is now fixed!
