I've been a happy Opera user for a few years now but since coming to Ununtu last year, I seem to have had the odd issue with it. For example I was unable to open a .smt file in Opera this morning, but Firefox worked perfectly.

So my question is which one of these browsers is more suitable for use with Linux
and also are there easier ways of opening a new tab in Firefox besides going to "File> new tab" on each occasion I need a new tab. For example can a "new tab" button be created somehow.

The keyboard shortcut for opening a new tab in FF is cntl-t. There's also an option in firefox preferences to open all new windows in a new tab instead of a new window.

As far as ff vs opera for Linux.. I can't comment. Don't have much experience with Opera.

Thanks, I appreciate the shortcut.

Both FF and Opera work fine on Linux.

Firefox is the default browser on Ubuntu, so naturally all the integration work is already done for you. Opera works fine, but you may have to tweak it's setup to get good integration with plugins and your desktop environment and what not.

For my money, Epiphany is well worth checking out - altho' at present I'm using SeaMonkey - stupid name, quick & intelligent browser... 8-)

If you download Opera, then download 9.50 beta. There are issues with the latest stable 9.25; Java and Flash don't work on it, but they do with 9.50 beta.

You can also add a new tab button by right clicking on an empty spca on the toolbar and selecting customise.

I've been using FF for a quite some time now. I have used Opera for 4 months. They both are good web browsers. Im more of a FF fan. You could be more of a Opera fan. Its all about your personal opinion. Working with Ubuntu FF would be the best choice because it is the default browser. Opera also works fine on Ubuntu some minor problems with plug-ins, but that is a quick fix. So its really up to you on what Web Browser you want to use.

9.50 fixed my flash issues however it closes itself without warning fairly often. I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly when it happens, but it seems to be when I'm loading more than one graphically intense page at once, or loading a page while downloading a file. Doesn't seem to like have 5+ tabs open. I remember this happening a year or so ago with an older version on XP, but it was eventually fixed. Since it's a beta it will probably be taken care of. Do you have this issue?

On topic, I have been an Opera user for 4 or 5 years, back when it came with ads. I think it's a great browser. Firefox is also nice but Opera innovated a lot of the features that Firefox got popular for. Better marketing I guess. Oh well, either one should be fine.
