View Full Version : ubuntuguide.org down?

jonmills

All of a sudden, I can't reach ubuntuguide.org. Can't ping it or anything; the address is simply not resolving.

As that was the fastest, most succinct, most useful site for Ubuntu help I've yet found, I'm quite concerned about its well-being. I'm hoping this is just a temporary thing.

BTW: I'm in Chapel Hill, NC, using a solid broadband connection. Please let me know if the maintainer(s) is having hosting troubles with the site, as I may have a few ideas of how to help.

Cheers!

Nice ;-) Let's hope it stays down.

Ubuntuguide.org is IMHO not very good.
For a better guide with much more correct instructions and one that actually explains what you are doing (at least sometimes), and one that can be improved by a lot of people, go to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDocumentation.

Arrrggghh, I can't even begin to express how annoyed I am by your post.

So someone takes a lot of his own time and probably even money to create a resource for this communit, that was very much needed at the time, was and still is widely used by this community and you think it is a brilliant idea to bash this guy and his work?

Jesus...

I will stop commenting now as any further comment would really get ugly and I don't want that.

I dont like the wiki so much
It is something about the color and the format of the page:(
I think is too bright
Most of what im learnt comes from the Ubuntuguide
Hope it comes back online soon

YEs, I don't like the wiki either. It seems to work as an encylopedia of knowledge, but not for Ubuntu.

How can people be so rude? When you say you have a preference for the wiki ok, but just don't come with plain "it's not so good", give at least a statement!

Personally i like the guide better because in the wiki i get lost. Although i find the principle of a wiki better, the guide is more usable and easier to me.

agreed! that kind of a comment about a site that, obviously, has had a lot of time put into to it, is not needed. when i first started using ubuntu, that site really helped me get the OS configured (still does!) :|

I'm going to join the chorus - The wiki isn't as easy to use as UbuntuGuide. I go to ubuntuguide after an install to make sure I have stuff installed and to do a tiny bit of tweaking.

This debate sucks!

It is not nice to diss the unofficial ubuntuguide. It has helped a lot of people.

The wiki has helped a lot of people, too. Both are great.

The wiki has unexploited potential, though. *Every* single person here has the ability to change how it looks, how it is organised and what goes in it. So no one should say that the wiki sucks, but rather that it needs work.

Or how about "I haven't gotten around to improving it, yet."

On the other hand, you can just sit back an use the unofficial guide. There is nothing wrong with that.

Don't apologize, everyone here has their own opinion :D

Keep in mind that others take things very seriously around here, and I for one do as well, but the guide and the wiki are two constant battles for some members here on which is better than the other.

Check your connection as it's still remains active on it's IP with the host it's running on.

Again, the website is up, but check your connection.

The guide rocks and is much simpler than the wiki.
The wiki rocks and has more potential than the guide.
The guide rocks and is easier to navigate than the wiki.
The wiki rocks as it is a shared knowledge pool.

Generally Steve was right, but it's not you who has to check something but your ISP who has to update their DNS server. Give it 2 days or try another DNS server.

Having several points of view on how to accomplish a specific task is never a bad thing. Your views are short sighted and fail to take into account the whole picture. Do everyone a favor, and despite my greatest hopes that someone this ignorant can't, don't reproduce.

I think we've had enough of a documentation war.... This topic is about the ubuntuguide being up/down. Let's learn to respect a handful's hard work at a resource dedicated to those common tasks that others have yet to place on the Wiki.

From my check, the guide is still down, so I will allow this thread to remain open (that is, until the next flame about documentation comes around)

Thank-you for the guide, I've used it often and found it to be very helpful!

A side topic here, I still cannot locate the w32codecs on the backport sites. I've tried the main and a mirror that was mentioned, but alas to no avail.

Is it confirmed that we should just sit tight?

Thx in advance for the advice, and again for the excellent work on the guide! It is excellent help.

How odd. When I click on the link at the top of this page, I get the old "The page cannot be displayed" message (from IE, but I would't think that would matter).

Curiouser and curiouser, I can access it from the same box using Firefox. I guess it's a setting in IE.

The wiki has a self-signed certificate.

Well I just did a whois for the domain and my service told me it was unregistered!!!!! So in a panic I purchased it for the good of ubuntu ;) If you need hosting space and DNS hosting for this site (yes for free) just shout!!!! I love the guide!

I'm not sure my registration will work but who knows! If it does can someone put me in touch with the creator of the site and we'll sort it out, and hopefully get up and running again soon.

Not sure at all mate. My ISP and a few others that I checked reported it as free to register so I thought I'd better do just in case. I do believe there are some odd things going on with that domain however. (I'm wondering if the ownership is being disputed)

Who ever gets the domain the offer to host is still there.

In a couple of hours http://ubuntuguide.squarecows.com should work. If anyone has the translations to send me I'll put them up too.

P.S.

Also has anyone thought about starting the update on this doucment for breezy yet?

I've recently moved ubuntuguide to godaddy.com. But it's taking them quite some time to put it up. I'm not sure why... Hope they will get it sorted. I've paid the $.

If they really can't sort the problem, then probrably i've got to find another hosting provider.

Yes, i'm planning for a breezy version of the UbuntuGuide soon. Hope it will release on the same time when the official breezy released.

Excellant,

Do you still need webspace I have buckets loads and plenty of bandwidth. I can start you off on 150GB per month and up that if you need it. I can also give you full control over e-mail address's (I offer pop and imap + webmail ) / DNS etc etc if you need that service.

Let me know what you need and I'll try and sort it.

let me wait for a day more for godaddy to sort my problem. else i have to ask refund from them and i'll shift to your server.

many thanks for the offer. 150GB is enough solely for the guide (without add-on-cd).

previously, i've got to moved ubuntuguide out from my previous server because it's sucking my friend's bandwidth and he is paying extra because of me.

For a better guide with much more correct instructions and one that actually explains what you are doing (at least sometimes), and one that can be improved by a lot of people, go to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDocumentation.

Except...
Firstly, the wiki is very slow to respond to edits.
Secondly, why does it always throw up a certificate message 'Unable to verify the something of this certificate etc etc'?

Secondly, why does it always throw up a certificate message 'Unable to verify the something of this certificate etc etc'?

As azz already mentioned, simply tell your browser to accept the certificate permanently and you won't be bothered again.

And please let's not restart the documentation flame war. I think if you look at the wiki and the guide, they are very different and have different uses, so I don't really see a problem here. And if you prefer one over the other, just use it, no need to flame other peoples work here.

Ric, you are the man. Thanks a lot for all the work, and I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same way. Ubuntu all the way!

I'm sorry if i was being rude before.

And I'm not going to discuss further why i dislike like it. (It will just turn into a flame war...)

Oh, and here is a mirror if you really need it: http://www.frankandjacq.com/ubuntuguide/5.04/index.html

Thanks for the mirror.

are you sure? dude. btw, in the mean time, does anyone have a downloaded copy of the guide?

Hi hi,

wow, have seen so much of debating for these few days regarding the guide and the wiki. I do not wish to participate on this though but just wanna say that ubuntuguide has helped me a lot in my confidence in linux and especially ubuntu.

Anyway, I have a copy of the ver 4.17 ubuntuguide in pdf format. Anyone wish to have it please let me know. Hope the owner has no objection in me giving out though.

So, anyone need it please let me know, k?

regards,

P/S : btw, there is one issue that I wish to highlight on mounting windows shared folder on ubuntu machine. The guideline given by ubuntuguide and the wiki will have some problem when copying files from ubuntu to the windows shared folder, you will notice that the date and time of the files get changed from the original date.

To resolve this, you will have to include a uid and gid in the command line for mounting.

Hey...weird...I don;t know if anybody else noticed, but I had the hardest time resolving ubuntuguide.org a couple days ago. Odd. :-)

Anyway, I just renewed my account for my domain, etc. with goDaddy.com for yet another year. :-) figured I'd offer some space. I have mirrored the guide here: http://drdabbles.us/ubuntuguide/5.04/index.html. I also added my mirror to the page header, updated the "last edited" line, and the changelog.

If there's interest in making the site completely mirrored at multiple addresses, I'd love to be in on it. Email me a tar.gz of the pages, images, etc. except the CD Image. If there's a place I can get that currently, I might add that to my mirror as well.

Yes, i'm planning for a breezy version of the UbuntuGuide soon. Hope it will release on the same time when the official breezy released.Hmm, regarding the wiki vs ubuntuguide debate, I came up with an idea.
Maybe the whole UbuntuGuide could be moved to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGuide or something, and after a while people could move over parts from it to separate wiki pages and then add links to them from UserDocumentation.

This would probably have many benefits... (the main issue with the UbuntuGuide ATM IMHO (except for it being down :/) is that it can't easily be improved by anyone. for example, I've found things i knew could be done in a better/cleaner way and if the guide was a wiki / at the ubuntu wiki, i would have fixed them, and we all would have benefitted)

[Just my 2 cents...]

I still feel that it should be in 2 seperate sites. I find that yours is much better in referencing. Anyway, the final decision is yours.

i agree... as mentioned in this discussion, the guide and the wiki are two different things with two different advantages. i think it's best to keep them separate.

That's exactly what it did for me, staying with ubuntu. I'am also very lost. :???:
How can people be so rude? When you say you have a preference for the wiki ok, but just don't come with plain "it's not so good", give at least a statement!

Personally i like the guide better because in the wiki i get lost. Although i find the principle of a wiki better, the guide is more usable and easier to me.
The guide helped me and my buddy make fairly smooth transitions from windows, the fact that its down will definitely be a bad thing for beginners.

The site seems to be down again!! I notice this thread was started in 2005. The tar.gz attached was for Ubuntu 5.04 :p

Does anyone have a mirror/tar.gz of the current (Feisty) guide?

Nice ;-) Let's hope it stays down.

Ubuntuguide.org is IMHO not very good.
For a better guide with much more correct instructions and one that actually explains what you are doing (at least sometimes), and one that can be improved by a lot of people, go to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserDocumentation.

I don't know what you're doing, but ubuntuguide.org helped me fix my resolution errors and helped me get ssh working, and I'm a complete noob. I'll admit the wiki.ubuntu.com hasn't helped me as much as ubuntuguide.org.

Looks like its 'officially' back up now :)

I agree ubuntuguide.org has to be one of the greatest guides for beginners to experts alike, when doing a fresh install. Very good reference guide that is!
