I'm kind of stuck in a rut here. I've been out of the compiz loop since it's first release, and now I'm not too sure which is the newest and best looking.
My question is, what's the best configuration out there? Compiz? Fusion? XGL?
Same goes with Beryl and Emerald...
My computer can handle all of it, I'm just not too sure what to install.
Thanks.

Beryl isn't supported anymore, so you shouldn't think about it. Compiz Fusion is the joint effort beeween the original developers of Compiz and what became the Beryl community. What's called Compiz Fusion is actually Compiz with a bunch of community developed plugins.
XGl is not an alternative to Compiz, is just an application which sits between compiz and the X server to provide the functionality that Compiz needs but your X video card drivers aren't able to provide (e. g.: old ATI drivers). So if for exaple you are using an ATI driver older than a couple of months, you need to use XGl to get compiz to work.
I hope this clarifies your doubts. You should look in the forums on how to enable Compiz now that you know a bit more about who is who.
