i am currently looking for an FLStudio equivilant. i've been using ubuntu for quite a few years now, and really don't want to go back to windows.
the only reason why i am considering going back to windows is because i need something like FLStudio, and something that is relatively easy to setup.
i've tried RoseGarden once before, but it is neither easy to use nor easy to install. i was thinking of UbuntuStudio, but i'm not sure if it will have what i need out-of-the-box, in which case it would be pointless me downloading it.
so any suggestions on how i can get started on making music on ubuntu?

LMMS is closest to FLstudio you can possibly get. The user interface is pretty much the same, although iother features are still pretty much under work. But give it a try, it should be in the repositories..

A much better option is Energy XT2 (http://www.energy-xt.com/xt2.php), but its not open source - it costs around 70$. The downside of audio apps in Linux is that you can`t use VST-plugs. Ok its possible, but its not as easy to set up as in windows.
If you want to work with VST plug-ins you will have to set up wineasio in combo with a low-latency kernel.
edit: there are some VST-plug-ins that HAVE been ported to Linux and can be easily used in the native XT2 version and this number is rising. but there are SO many great freeware and commercial VST-s that haven`t been ported that it would be a shame not to try them.
ps: here is another link worth looking at: http://www.linux-vst.com/

and what's ardour like? i see it relies on jack. is it as hard to get working as rosegarden? and which would you suggest more, ardour or lmms?

Ardour is a multi-channel pro-audio mixing app - comparable to pro tools.
LMMS is more an instrument/song creation app.
I'm not sure what FLStudio is like (never used it) but if you're into editing loops and sequencing a song, try Renoise http://www.renoise.com
If you're planning on doing audio in ubuntu, I'd highly recommend getting ubuntu studio and relying on jack. Studio has the realtime kernel (which allows for low latency) and a ton of audio apps. Jack is the only audio driver that's adjustable enough to accommodate many audio tasks.

EnergyXT2 looks strikingly simliar to Ardour... Is it the same thing but with support?

no it's an entirely different program, just the colors are similar.
