Hey guys, unfortunately for me I've been forced to use Vista on my desktop for a number of reasons, though I still get the joy of Ubuntu on my laptop. Since my desktop is like my "home base" where I keep the official versions of all my data (music, photos, video, documents, etc....), I need some backup software so I can backup to my external USB hard drive - my old software is incompatible with Vista. I've looked, but have not been able to find a good piece of backup software that works in Vista. Can anybody suggest something?

Preferably it should be free, and I don't need anything fancy like file version management, or compressed backups. Just backup new files/folders and those that have changed. If you can assure me that it's good and what I'm looking for, I'm willing to pay a little.
I feel so dirty... :(
Thanks for any input you can offer.

I installed XP over my Vista in the end so I'm not currently using it, but if you're using anything but the basic version of Vista, you get a backup program included which as I remember worked well for me when I tried it.

A really good backup program for Windows is the Ubuntu LiveCd. Boot from the live cd, and backup your whole partition to the external usb drive, can't do better than that, if you don't have space, and want to do a smaller backup, copy the directories you need (cp) with recursive and update parameters, so each time only the changed files will be copied.
For a whole partition backup, you can't do better since no windows system files are locked.

What version of Vista?

With the Ultimate version you can make a complete backup of your computer with the built-in tools. It requires a second HD, but will backup all of your settings and files. If your system drive is lost you can boot with the install disk and then restore from your restore in about 5-10 minutes.

To be honest the built-in tool with Ultimate is probably the best I have seen on the Windows side and I have yet to find a good one for Linux.

I'm using Vista Home Premium. There is a sort of built in backup/recovery device, but it's not what I'm looking for. It allows you to specify file types, but not specific directories. I JUST want to back up my C:\media directory where I keep everything important (that I also share between computers).
Just backing up the whole hard drive from the LiveCD or dragging and dropping the folder is not what I'm looking for.
I'll have a look at the cobain software, I think I've run across that before. Thanks.
