Hi there
First: Bill Gates will "pension off" (retire, sorry, not very good with this kind of word), right after the complete fail of Windows Vista in almost every area: general performance, stability, compatibility, DX10 not offering so much more than DX9.0c.
OpenGL only support SM2.0 for now. Are there plans for SM 3.0 and even 4.0 support?
Linux will dominate the world o/

Do you mean SM 4.0 for Linux?
I heard justabout SM 3.0, nothing about SM 4.0... but it's OK anyway.
Man, the way Microsoft is today, is Linux get really easy to use, like Windows, and get good software support, it'll dominate the world!
Higher audio quality, safer, and... man, Microsoft is in trouble :)

What I see :
Linux will remain anecdotal concerning the Gaming market : Linux users (majority) wil continue to promote Microsoft technologies through Windows Games and Wine.
Mac OS X will become more popular and alternative development tools such as SDL or Open GL will get momentum
Free games will never be as finished as commercial games
Only very few gaming companies will keep an eye on Linux, as there are very few potential buyers

But seriously, I think with the introduction of papervision3D we might see a surge in games that's linux compatible... ;)

o_O
what's this?
Man, we have to be optimist!
Even ATI is paying atention to Linux, Windows Vista sux³³³³³³³³³... Id Software pay attention to Linux... ok, I know that's only Id, but is one company!
The gaming industrie will not pay attention to Linux until a good amount of users use it, and that's what I expect to see. With Ubuntu getting better and easier to use, as soon we get almost independent from console commands and etc for common users (for sure, we should kep these features, as advanced users use them), Linux , as it's free, can get more and more popular... at least if Apple keep Mac OSX for Macs (I know there's hacked PC versions, but they're complicated to install and Linux is much more dynamic).
Some good steps for linux would be:
Graphical installer without need to start a Live CD (not a major issue...)
Graphical interface for installing/uninstalling drivers (Like Windows' Device manager)
Graphical interface for everuthing that's basic... installing programs... and some options during intallers, I don't know if that's possible... You know, check boxes....
More binary installers/More pre-compiled programs, even betas (Windows like, u know), and more frequently.
A graphical interface to uninstall compiled programs (./configure, make, make install) supporting different compilers (such cmake etc) (basically it would be a program that store a list of files for compiled prograsm and, once you click "Uninstall", it would delete them)
And much, much more, man...
But get easier is essential.
Ps.: when I say Linux here, undestand as Ubuntu]
Linus generally has a bad reputatoion of being incompatible, being hard to use an etc, that's why we need to make it feeel like Windows. Unfortunately, for us, Microsoft is not dumb and their interface is simple, easy to use and etc...

What is it with so many users and games? Or do we really have so many young people in here? Not complaining about the young people though. It's just that we have to realise that there comes a time in one's life where computer games become very insignificant. :)

This is actually pretty confusing to me too,why everyone picks an OS solely based upon gaming.........btw I am 17 lol
If MS died Mac would pick up solely based upon popularity.Mac is more popular then Linux sadly.I don't see Linux taking over the world any time soon...I might be wrong.

papervision3D is a 3d engine which is build into flash 9. The graphics are simple, dated (think playstation 1) but it will be crosscompatible considering they're supporting flash on linux.

Games is the best way to tell a story. More engaging than a movie, quicker than reading a book and more vivid than telling a story.

Ahhh! Exactly what I was thinking earlier today. I went on a game installing binge, trying out Spring, Warsow, Tremulous, Cube, Sauerbraten (sp), Wesnoth, among others. As nice as Linux gaming is, it seems open source games can't match commercial games in polish. The only exception I feel is Warsow, but the game still feels old. Seeing the graphical styles of open source games makes me think it pays to have some people on staff for art design. I guess you get what you pay for.
The biggest thing for me is canoodling with options outside the game itself. Most commercial games have you changing resolution in game, while some linux games have you editing cfg files and launch parameters. Yum. And then there were the @$^#% silly permission errors I got installing Wolf:ET and a few id software games. Sheesh. When the package manager has what you want, life can be okay, but otherwise, I'd like my games easy to use, thankyouverymuch.
I don't mean this to be very negative, as some of the games are quite good. Just don't ask me to name any, because I don't know which I would say. I think I played a couple of them for more than five minutes.

If you told me that when I was in seventh grade, I might have agreed with you-- even though Dungeons & Dragons and those old Choose Your Own Adventure books were then considered great "gaming" too.
But, at thirty-one, things change. (Warning: philosophical statement ahead...) You find that living is actually more engaging than any movie, book or game. :)

And anyone that's young will say you're saying ******** XD

I'll not say that, even i'm 18. I know you're right, coz I, when I was 10, thought ppl who were 18 were wrong about study, and now I know they were right.
Well... I know a guy who is 35 and still like games... not like me, but he do play games a lot.
Anyway, nobody "picks an OS solely based upon gaming", is that this is one of the worst fields for Linux and, I don't know if you noticed, this topic is on the Gaming & Leisure section of the forum. Although we are talking about gamin, no OS depends exclusively on it. I'm just sad to see that, If I want to game, I have to use MS Windows and it has so many deffects. Linux is still complicated, but it do everything I want and don't have this poor sound quality.

Real life is always more intresting than a game, but a lot of the adventurous experiences in life costs money (travelling). So gaming is a cheap alternative for a student ;)
PS. I'm 25 and I don't feel childish or ashamed to like games at my age.

Nah, it depends person-to-person. It's with that way you were brought up and 'trained' to live your life.
I know people and families who are into gaming and MMORPGs even. And they are more closely-knit than the non-gaming families.
It isn't really about which is more engaging or life vs gaming. Games are for leisure, for fun, for entertainment. Matured people regardless of age know that. It is all about self-control and discipline.
My take on the matter ;)
But yah, I agree, life is more fun than gaming :p
