Does anyone here know if I would be able to install speakup on Gutsy? I don't know much about Linux but I am willing to break a few installs to learn.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sure.
You can get it installing kernel-patch-speakup (this is the name of package to install). You can do it in different ways: executing "apt-get install name_of_package" in command line or with Synaptic (graphic tool in gnome: go to system, administration and synaptic), for instance.
Good luck, A.

Thank you, I will try that shortly and let you know how it turns out. I have other problems at the moment that have to be my first priority as I just broke my MBR, and have to boot from the external HDD I installed Ubuntu on... Oops. Its off to the noob forums for me. :)

I wanted to thank you for you assistance. I have decided for know just to use orca as I don't have an external synth, but I appreciate the help.
