On distrowatch, Ubuntu and Kubuntu are now on a decline...
What can this mean....that people are shifting away from Ubuntu and going to Mandriva?

Give it time, Breezy will release and the level points will increase to 3000 up. It's like the stock market, it's going to have it's downs before the goods come in :)
Of course people will test out Mandriva, and when they see that Ubuntu provides more service and support, they will shift over. It's just a matter of time before this happens.

Do some mere numbers on Distrowatch really mean anything? The fact that it's number one doesn't mean that it is the best nor the worst, it's simply in fashion enough for people to talk about it. Look how "low" Gentoo is. How in the world could you say Mepis or Damn Small are better than Gentoo? What about Red Hat? Sure, it's nice to Ubuntu is in the mouth of everyone Linux lately, but let's not let those stats get over our head now.

Don't give me an answer, I don't want one. It's not a stock market, it's a fashion rank.

I see your point, but it was just an example. Please do not take what I said seriously as I gave an example to show the users what I mean.
Secondly, I have tested every distro out there, and so far, no one compares close to Ubuntu's Support & Services. I am sorry if you see it differently and might find this to be a bash, which it's not it's a fact and a statement in which is true.

Your experiences do not apply for everyone. Also, I'm not sure one single human and throughly test every distro out there, so that is a lie. And if you mean the "major distros", it's still impossible to test every aspect of them for someone. Just curious, just what Support & Services do you talk about? Again, do not judge nor talk about the other distros nor Ubuntu. Don't use each opportunity you get to bash Linux in general.

I don't mean to be rude in this area, but I will have to be considering you have opened a door for me to do so in calling me a liar. A moderator does NOT put a member down nor do they call them liars. Please re-think that line you just put there bored2k.
Now, let me say this again and please read carefully as you can not seem to apprehend what I just said and took me as a liar. " I have tested EVERY MAJOR DISTRO out there, I did this for a school project in college to retrieve all package supports and reproduction services for each application and what it's use is for.
By all means please call me a liar, but I am sure my friends would love to give you a word of advice of how it feels to be called a liar when testing every distro out for almost 3 years. I don't think everyone here would like to be watching a moderator call someone a liar, also because this mod has no proof, nor do I want to show you mine because it's not a matter of life and death at this point.
If someone has said something and you do not believe them and even if you didn't know they had it or not does NOT consider them or give you the right to call them a liar.
Thank You!

First of all, I just checked out the DistroWatch, and Ubuntu's still #1, so I don't see what your point is.
Secondly, here's a little excerpt from DistroWatch's FAQ page (http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=faq):
Since each distribution has its own page, I decided to track the number of visitors viewing individual web pages. The HPD figure represents hits per day by unique visitors, the emphasis being on the word unique; the uniqueness is determined by the visitor's IP address. This prevents those visitors, not disciplined enough, from rigging the results by reloading the pages multiple times. The idea is to identify which distributions attract most attention and to rank them accordingly.... Admittedly, the page clicks by themselves may not always reflect the popularity correctly. They are also "seasonal", meaning that distribution currently in beta testing will often receive much more clicks than the one past the stable release.
Basing ranking on the number of clicks does not mean Ubuntu's the most popular, just the most interesting.

I am sure you want me to fall into your loved -not correct- public correction area, but I know better.

That sounds a bit harsh!

This really confuses me. I don't see how Steve uses each (or any, actually) opportunity he gets to bash Linux!
And why can't we talk about other distros or (especially) Ubuntu?! :???:

That sounds a bit harsh! It is a harsh statement. Saying you have tested every distro available won't really get anyone's interest.

Bored2k, as mod, you should already know that in conversations like this should not be delt with on the forum(s). If you would like, please PM me and I would be more than happy to talk with you about this there.
Please don't continue to bash me or what I have said anymore or I will be reporting you to the admins, this is not a little kids playground for you to ride all over my words and prove yourself to be in control. I am not sure what motivated you to bash me nor have I even come close to bashing your topics or posts, but I would appreciate it if you would throw out an apology to me as you can not judge someone when you say they have not done it.
Also, every distro is a major to me as they all are important to the user(s) who run them.
It is a harsh statement. Saying you have tested every distro available won't really get anyone's interest.
Do I need to say anymore about what you have just said in which I stated above about judging and bashing users? I don't plan nor do I want anyones interest in my posts as I have a freedom of speech in this world and so do you, but your context of judging goes way out of line for someone as a mod who serves this community.
Again, you can PM me to discuss this further. But please don't reply back as the private message would be more convenient.
Thank You

*shrug* Well, it got my interest, having made the assumption that he had meant every major distribution...which after he clarified his statement I found to be the correct assumption.

bored2k's first language isn't english, so he may not have known to assume the word "major"
Steve, just because you've tested every major distro, doesn't mean that it is a FACT that ubuntu is better than everyone else, it means YOU believe it to be.
Let's all calm down now.

Geez... Sometimes reading these forums is as bad as watching an episode of Dawson's Creek.
Anyways, IMHO, Ubuntu is where it is in popularity due to hype. That's why I came here to begin with, but it's not why I've stayed. I also think it's level of hype is deserved. However, hype like this cannot be sustained forever, and you may find in time that Ubuntu is a stepping stone distribution that many folks use before moving on to a more specialized distribution that suits their requirements better. It takes plenty of work to keep the hype, and plenty of work is exactly what's being done.
The 6month release cycle will keep the hype relatively high for a while though as each release of Ubuntu will break new ground. Breezy will be another biggy, and so will Dapper. Ubuntu does a very nice job of upholding its promise of being for everyone, depending on your interpretation of that statement. It suits my interpretation perfectly I'd say.
Cheers,
~djc

Look, I'm not trying to stoke the flames, I just want to understand what exactly the current interpretation of the code of conduct is here :
Is being enthusiastic about Ubuntu a no-no now ? Because in my book, Steve was just being enthusiastic, and wasn't bashing anyone - no "Mandiva suxors" in there. Being nice to others does not mean never offering a negative opinion.
And sure, what he says about Ubuntu's quality etc. is his opinion - how could it not be ?
If non-technical discussion is not to be allowed on these forums, this should be clarified, and the community cafe area removed.
edit : I'm saying this because people seem to be getting concerned about moderation and "censorship" lately, and I guess this stems from wanting to allow free discussion here but without any nastiness. That may never happen. Removing the non-technical areas can accomplish this.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on Distrowatch's rankings. Those bounce around from month to month, but the true growth of a distro is better reflected in the degree of user participation, development strength, breadth of documentation, availability of support resources, and release quality.

Personally I think distrowatch's system is crap (I always have). If Ubuntu moves down some its just because the GNU community works in cycles.

I really hope this Community Chat does not have to worry about that, But if it does get out of hand, I am afraid it will lead to that.

"I really hope this Community Chat does not have to worry about that, But if it does get out of hand, I am afraid it will lead to that."
What Poof meant was that we may be making two separate Chat sections. This one may end up being the one for more risky topics, or another one may be made for that. It's just a question of how we're going to transition into the two new sections, because going through and moving every topic to its appropriate section would take a year ;)
