I am sat here with a Vista laptop that my boss's PA needs. And for the love of all things holy, it's driving me crazy!!!!
"Windows has found new hardware. What you want me to do?"
Do EXACTLY what I told you to do 5 ********in reboots ago.
And stop telling me that I have installed new hardware.
I KNOW I STUCK THE PCMCIA CARD IN YOUR HOLE!!!
He lumps this on me last thing after everyone has gone home
:(
Sorry just sharing the pain in the hope it will ease a little...

Did you ever laugh at someone who slipped on a banana peel? Not because they hurt themselves when they fell, but at the loop-de-loop they did going down?
This is one of those times. I understand your frustration and anger but couldn't help myself here. :lolflag:
I mean step aside for a second, and look at it as if someone else had posted what you just said. It is funny!
"Windows has found new hardware. What you want me to do?"
1. Accept PCMCIA card and install drivers, so you can go home for the weekend?
2. Tell Gates where to go?
3. Both of the above?
4. Nuke myself and install Ubuntu complete with the PCMCIA drivers?
5. Do Steps 2 & 4?
Sorry I can't be of any help, I've never even seen Windows Vista, but I know from reading that it doesn't like it when you make changes to "your" hardware. The nerve of some OS's.
Take a deep breath and grab a sledge hammer!

In my short time using Vista, I got the same thing whenever I turned on the printer. I didn't disconnect it or anything, but Windows thought it was now every time I pressed the power button. My understanding is that it has something to do with using drivers that weren't specifically designed for Vista.
Frustrating, but I can't offer anything better than the sledgehammer idea. ;)

and.......... that's why I hate vista. Pop in a usb drive: I found new hardware, what do u want me to do?
Me: Install it, like duh!
Vista: Are you sure?
Me : well, yea
Vista: are perfectly sure, cuz I don't know what it could do to me
Me: install it or I'll kick ur ***
Vista: Ok, here goes nothing..
Tada::: BSOD
And they still bash Gentoo

If one makes changes to their Vista hardware, it can trigger reactivation.

Cheers Guys. I eventually saw the funny side. I mean after 45mins and a beer ;)
I have been a Linux user for 8 years and never had 50% of the problems I have with this one card. I am currently working on switching our companies platform to Linux, spending a LOT of cash on consultants, and the Boss buys a Vista PC.

I don't drink, but if I was with driving distance I'd buy you another beer!
So if you have a second one, "CHIMO!" ... OK, "CHEERS!"

lol, i remember back in my XP days(the dark ages) it kept detecting the built in ethernet connection as 'new hardware' every 15 minutes. never knew how to fix, or even supress, the pop ups.
ubuntu just gave me one little warning that it needed to install some proprietry drivers the first time it booted and left me alone after that.

Your sig says you can't think of a clever sig.
I think you have a GREAT one, not meaning to misquote you here but:
"Windows has found new hardware. What you want me to do?"
Do EXACTLY what I told you to do 5 ********in reboots ago. And stop telling me that I have installed new hardware.
I KNOW I STUCK THE PCMCIA CARD IN YOUR HOLE!!!
Can you tell us what the final result of all this was?
1. Windows finally relented and installed the thing.
2. Took the sledghammer advice. (oopps!)
3. Installed Linux for my boss.
4. Other solution. Which was ...

Gotta come back to this thread. :D
I have a an Acer workhorse laptop. The boss has a spanky new Sony 11" sleek bit of kit cost a months salary :) Anyway. I FINALLY sorted the problem out. After much banging of heads on tables.
I then slap my laptop down next to his, mines switched off at this point (it's running Gutsy). I restart his laptop and switch mine on at the same time as his starts. Totally unintentional this but hey. He thens says, "Why is yours faster than mine?" I tell him, "remember, we are trying out Linux" "Get me that then, looks great. Will all my stuff work?" I say NO, because he bought Orange 3G cards that I haven't been able to get working, UNTIL today :D
I now have 3G PCMCIA card working like a charm. Runs like a B*****D :lolflag: I am also using Hamachi and rDesktop with SeamlessRDP desktop to run native win apps from our server.
He sees my lappy running 3G FASTER then his and gives another push to the migration project we are currently under taking.
We should have 30+ PC's Linux'ed by August this year I reckon.
Just wanted to let you guys know ;) Result all round
