Doom 3

Fairly new Linux user here. Please explain in n00b language.

I installed Doom 3 on my system with no problem. Except, when I launch the program, all I get is a black screen. Nothing else. No sound, no nothing. Does anybody know what's wrong?

I have an nVidia GEFORCE 5200 FX (128 MB VRAM).

Have you installed the correct Nvidia 3D drivers for your 5200FX? The default "free" drivers that ubuntu installs will not allow you to run 3D games.

There are numerous threads here on the forum on the best way to install the Nvidia drivers.

Make sure your driver is nvidia instead of nv in the oxg.conf file. Although I think it is if your just getting a black screen. How are you killing it when you get the black screen? Try running it from terminal and see what errors you get.
