Hi;
I am part of a Canadian group helping with a development project in Ghana. The project has several members and e-mail is no long a efficient means of communication. I was wondering if anyone new of base camp equivalent software that is 100% free, and preferably open source. I do mind if it requires hosting as I can afford that personally.
I have tried project2manage and goplan. Project2manage was not bad but is riddled with advertisements.
Any suggestions?
Please and Thank you for any answers.

Check out this site http://www.whybasecampsux.org/, which lists lot's of free and open-source alternatives for basecamp. Also try out Projectpier (http://www.projectpier.org/). Hope this helps.

Thank you, it did. Project Pier looks like a great application.
We ended up going with Moodle.

Intervals (http://www.myintervals.com) is free if you are managing one project, which would probably work for your needs. It does task and time tracking, along with reporting and document uploading, so your team could communication from all over.

I recommend trying 5pm (www.5pmweb.com (http://www.5pmweb.com))
It has email integration, reports, visual timeline and many more features. Here is a direct to the demo, to skip the website: beta.5pmweb.com (http://beta.5pmweb.com)

If you don't want ads another option is ProjectSpaces - http://www.projectspaces.com, which is really simple to use. It focuses on usability and caters to groups who aren't very tech savvy and need something easy.

Thanks for posting the basecampsux website, that big list is really comprehensive.
Ya I was going to suggest project pier as well.
I'd say be careful about using Moodle for project management, I'm not sure if it's set up to handle those sorts of tasks specifically.

Thanks guys.
Moodle worked briefly in a pinch. We will now me migrating to project pier as mentioned previously moodle has its limitations and is not designed for the tasks we need it to do.

wow I was ready to dive into Basecamp until I searched it on the forums. I listened to its creator a couple of years ago and he really had some neat ideas.
I will have to do more research now.
