I was dabbling around in GIMP when I came with the idea for a new way of accessing program launchers.

It would be a vertical wheel in a corner that you could click and spin (by pulling it up or down). This would rotate a the icons on the wheel, allowing you to find the one you want.

Attached is the (poorly made, I know) mockup and how it would integrate into the desktop.

It might be implemented on its own, or perhaps as a mode of Avant-Window Navigator - maybe even as a pop-open applet like spaces does currently.

Do you think it has merit?

Mouseover then using the scrollwheel would be great.

I wonder if anybody in AWN would implement this.

Would it be better if it were bigger? Does it seem like something that would stay open permantly, like a dock, or a pop open object?

A similar idea, but a bit different layout

but if we were to add more icons would it not cover the whole of the desktop? I would rather have it side on with the opton of adding as many icons as possible and yet have it just say 4/5 icons visible, the rest can just take the turn wheel.

True, but I think the idea for both implementations would be to just add your most used programs otherwise you spend more time scrolling through the list and then the purpose is self-defeating.
