How can I get my Ubuntu desktop to resemble a generic, plain-vanilla Gnome installation?

I am preparing a tutorial for new Gnome users, and I want it to be distribution-independent. (Not everyone uses Ubuntu yet.) Hence, I do not want the Ubuntu logo in screen shots, and I would prefer the desktop to be set up exactly as the default installation described in the Gnome Project documentation.

Is there a simple way to do this?

Well there's a package in Synaptic called Ubuntu-desktop, so perhaps you'll need to get rid of that. Not sure what you should replace it with though, or if replacing it is even necessary.

Removing ubuntu-desktop won't do anything (unless you did a non-GNOME install and installed it afterwards yourself) , because it's a metapackage.

I'd recommend checking out Foresight Linux, as it has the "purest" (and latest) GNOME.
There's also a Live-CD available so I guess this should be best for your needs.

Foresight is a good idea. If you wanted to stick with Ubuntu, just use the Clearlooks theme and Tango icons. That will give you a pretty generic Gnome feel. May throw in a Gnome wallpaper from gnoome-look....
