I've tried looking through other threads for solutions, but most of them involve different graphics cards than what I have. I have common problems, like Wine causing my computer to lock-up, not being able to login after installing xserver-xgl, can't enable desktop effects, etc.

I'm on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon on an old desktop computer. It currently has 448 MB of RAM
Result of 'compiz' before installing xserver-xgl:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Result after installing xserver-xgl:
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Anything else I might need to check before getting help?
By the way, my computer also locks up when I try to run Wine or Crossover. I hope to get all my problems solved in one thread, but I'll take what I can get. I've been using Ubuntu for a few months now, so still kind of a n00b.
