I was playing around on my mom's computer, running Gutsy. Standard desktop, x86. Don't know any of the details, but I know it's running the default desktop effects (compiz?). I hit a hotkey combination, attempting to do something in Firefox, but I actually had focus on the desktop (this is what I THINK happened). Now, every single fade-in/fade-out effect is drastically slower. Every new window opening, every menu load/unload, closing every window, drop down menus, etc. They all take upwards of 1-2 full second to fade-in or out entirely.
Doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're navigating through drop down menus and every menu you pass over takes a full second to fade-in, then another second to fade-out, it makes the system very difficult to use.
HOWEVER, the effects are quite smooth, and once the applications are loaded, they run fine. Clearly, some animation parameters got modified by the hotkey combination I hit, and I don't remember what it was. A search for this problem has turned up quite a few instances of other people having this problem, but I have not yet found a solution. Perhaps this hotkey feature should be disabled in future updates...
