I'm new to Linux and I've been reading articles about Compiz, Beryl, ATI, desktop effects, etc... and now I'm really very confused.
I'm using ATI Radeon X1900 series graphic card.
If I understood it right, Ubuntu 7.10 comes with Beryl and Beryl does not support X1900 (R580 chipset) ATI graphic cards. So in order to make desktop effects work, I need to install Compiz and XGL.
Is this right?
If it is, how can I install Compiz and XGL? And are the desktop effects gonna work for sure after I install Compiz?
I don't want to install the latest ATI driver (7.12) because I cannot set the resolution to 1680x1050 with it. So is it possible to continue to use the restricted fglrx driver that comes with Ubuntu 7.10 and still install Compiz&XGL and use desktop effects?

Beryl is dead. Gutsy come with Compix already installed.

Go to System --> Preferences --> Appearance

then go to the Visual effects tab and select Extra to see if your machine is set up to run with these effects.

You may also check your Restricted Drivers Manager in administration to see if you have the ATI video driver installed.

I can't select desktop effects because it gives an error saying: "the composite extension is not available" I have the restricted drivers installed.
Do I need to install XGL?

OK, I have installed XGL and now I could select the desktop effects.
