Hey everyone,
I recently got a new laptop. It came with vista and I was wondering what sidebar gadgets does everyone like/use?

I have the Vista transformation pack on one of my XP machines. It looks exactly like Vista Ultimate but runs XP. My favorite is the weatherbug readout, RSS reader and the clock. You can download the Vista Transformation Pack 7 from Major Geeks and you also need Windows Blinds 5.
My machine is a old Gateway E-3200 with 550 Mhz, 768 Ram and 20 GB hard drive. I highly doubt the real Vista would run on that...lol....
(This is what (IMO) MS should have released, kept it as a XP with SP3 and then add the eye candy of Vista with the sidebar and gadgets and call it Windows 2007)

Several of the gadgets available here:

Multimeter Quad, the network meter, volume control, memory meters. SFKilla, the guy who runs the site, does some amazing stuff with his gadgets.
One nice thing about Ubuntu is I can do almost all that with just Conky:)

how do you like that transformation pack? It it a trial or a totally free program? I was looking around and everything says free trial, i just don't want to install it and have it only be "free" for like a month or something lol.

It looks just like Vista, it is a free program. I do believe, however that the Transformation pack # 8 is a trial/pay interface. The one I downloaded was from Major Geeks was Vista transformation pack # 7, and I also had to download Windows Blinds 5. All it really is just a GUI interface transformation. its still XP, but it looks just like Vista.
They do warn you however that the transformation pack could change some things in your system files and that Windows Updates could revert the transformation pack into a XP interface. Also I had to delete one of the XP updates before I could install it.
My advice is to do a restore point and back up your files before installing it. My Gateway is a older machine so I didn't mind trying the transformation pack on it, if It didn't go well I could just do a system restore.
Do some Googling before attempting the transformation, I believe there are forums out there for this.

Just a comment on VTP8....it is free as I've used it on a few PC's. Overall it gives you a great vista look and you can even tweak it to give you something in between Vista and XP, Which is what I really wanted. Anyways here's the link to the site and have fun with it.
