I'll always have a soft spot for windows 95, since that was what was on my family's first computer when I was a kid.

There's an interesting article about the guy who was hired to create the startup sound for win95. I set it to play as my slackware install starts up, just for kicks. A friend of mine (Windows guy) asked me if that was supposed to be a form of blasphemy. :lolflag:

I much prefer Linux and non-proprietary software, but I windows 95 was cool.

I love the simplicity of DOS. I have FreeDOS on my old laptop. And although I've never tried it, you can run almost any DOS app on FreeDOS.
Also, for all you retro Windows fans, I've been able to get Windows 3.1 running on FreeDOS.

Ah, the good ol' days of deleting that damn drwtsn because it was pissing me off. Oh yeah, and the briefcase went straight into the trash.

I used to rename the default icons for fun, "My Comput0r" or "Mr. Rogers Network Neighborhood". I remember when that damn inbox piece of crap wouldn't go away, so I turned it into a useful launcher. I think it launched a DOS app.

There's a PC here at work that still runs 95. It's used only for programming chips and transferring data off 5 1/4" floppies, and has a terribly burned screen from the screen saver failing to launch after the system froze up. Oh yeah, and someone put a hack on it to use the PC speaker as the sound card. It sounds really terrible.

I'll see if I can pull a cool screenshot from it.

Oh man, that took a long time! First, the PC crashed because there was no drive space left, so I had to empty the Recycle bin, and then it froze up. So I hit reset, and discovered that there's only 8M free on it (it has a 400M hard drive). So, I may have to take care of that problem, because we still occasionally use it. Last virus it was infected with was Klez, and the removal utility is still sitting on the desktop. But this screenshot shows my favorite aspect of the computer.

What I remember the most about 95 was going into mirc and being attacked by all those DoS attacks like LAND and stuff like that, I remember changing the winsock to avoid the attacks which eventually stopped me connecting to dial up altogether then preventing me from even booting up, but I guess DoS attacks stopped.

I even remember my old cyrix processor couldn't handle mp3 files without slowing the system down to a crawl. One last thing I definitely remember, my favorite in fact, was a game called Blood. Now that was awesome.

believe it or not... because MS has abandoned w95, there are a few companies that have picked it up and have started using it for CNC controllers. dos allows for direct hardware control, and i guess the gui is better than windows 3.11. Seems counter productive to me, but that is my opinion.

Being in the repair business , I can assure you there are still many windows 95 boxes out there , thing is... is that they can't handle web 2.0 , Fact is....that I can't find a Linux distro small enough and easy enough to offer these people.

I suppose you could give them OpenGem with FreeDOS but it's not nearly as capable as Win95. If all else fails it's a possibility.

I know what you mean, though have you ever tried running AoE3? I've never managed to get it to run properly on any of my PC's

K.Mandla
January 13th, 2008, 11:58 PM
AoE was excellent, particularly with that Rise of Rome (?) expansion ... queueing build commands was so much nicer than building clumps of archery ranges.

I should see if I can find my old Win95 CD in here somewhere.

I wonder if it'd be illegal to get if off a torrent site now?

I'm just thinking because it's 12 years old, and MS don't support it anymore...so surely they wouldn't care in the slightest?

Bungo Pony
January 14th, 2008, 02:42 PM
I actually have an authentic Win95 CD at home, and it's not holographic! Doesn't get used much anymore. I don't use Win95 anymore, so it doesn't crash anymore :)

Win95 is horribly outdated by today's standards. You can't use large hard drives, you can't use USB (unless you have Win95SE), you can't even go on Yahoo unless you install a newer web browser (which will run slow as hell on an old PC)

Damn Small Linux is definately the best way to go for older PCs.

Joeb454
January 14th, 2008, 02:58 PM
I meant for running as a virtual machine, then you could give it a MASSIVE 128mb RAM, and run all your old favourite Win95 games...probably.

I'll have to look into the legality of it, or find my old Win95 disc

So..since it is "abandoned" what exactly does that mean? If I found a win95 cd around and pulled a cd key off of some machine I found in the trash would that be legal to do? What does "abandoned" entail besides no more support?

This is exactly what I want to know :) It'd be nice to run a Win95 box again...even if just in a VM

I would assume that since the key for the (junk found in the trash) windows 95 machine can be re-used again on another machine. I believe the EULA states that Windows can be installed on only one machine at a time.

As for "downloading" Windows 95 on bit torrent or elsewhere would likely be illegal (one could argue the point that the actual OS is nothing with out the key so nothing in that sense is illegal...but it would be much safer and clearly legal to get a Win 95 disc- who knows what kind of "added on" items you get in a Windows OS downloaded from somewhere) . Finding or buying a old disc and using a key from a junk non working machine should be legal.

Well, I tried it through a VM (virtualbox) and it got through the install...but then when it reaches "Windows is starting for the first time" it says "Please put in the disk" (you know the dance) Well...this does me no good since I can only get it to install from an iso image and when i put in the actual disk it cant see it. Sort of a Wine-esque problem. What am I doing wrong here, even if I go into preferences and tell it to mount the disk it still just wont find the dll.

Joeb454
January 16th, 2008, 08:15 PM
I know VMWare supports using the physical Disc Drive...but I'm not sure about Virtual Box.

Have you tried making an iso image of the disc and using that? I'm sure it's not that big (or DRM'd) lol

Ripfox
January 17th, 2008, 04:07 AM
Re-read my previous post and you will see that I am using an iso image, still halts the process after it boots to the os for the first time :)

Yes, I had to add myself to the vboxusers group (in "users and groups"), and mount the cdrom in Virtualbox. I actually have a legal copy of Win95 so it's fine. It works great! Virtualbox is kick-***.

Mint user, we don't condone piracy on this forum you know...:(
