Hello,

I'm using a hp pavilion 6648c with Win98 SE.
Specs:

AMD K6-2 550 MHz
64 MB of ram (SDRAM)

I've tried to install Ubuntu using the Live CD countless times.

I have have checked the cd's integrity a couple of times.
But the the same thing happens.

I boot the PC with the disk in.
I get the Ubuntu boot menu.
I click "Start or Install"
The load bar loads for 5 minutes or so,
then the screen goes black with just one single underslash in the top left-hand corner.
Then nothig.

I've been doing research that xubuntu would be beter for older and slower computers,
but i want to know if there is a way befoer i download it.

Thanks.

yep, Ubuntu won't work on that - here is the min.system requirements for Xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/get

on that machine, you'd probably be better off trying a lighter distro yet, like puppylinux or damnsmalllinux - or google search "linux for older computers"

I don't know, theoretically, yes - but I was linking to the infomation so you coluld decide if you wanted to try or not (did you look at it?)

Minimum system requirements

To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM.

To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 128 MB RAM.

Err, I don't know if you realize this, but you posted this to the x64-bit forum.

64 bit anything won't run on a K6-2. It's a 32-bit processor. You need the 32 bit version of Ubuntu, dear ;)

If that's what you are indeed trying to install, try posting this same question in the regular "Installation" help forum - you'd get better help there than people thinking you're trying to shoehorn a 64 bit OS onto a 32 bit system.

Oh, and as a recommendation, I think I'd go a little further back and try something like Xubuntu 6.06 LTS on that system, if any kind of Ubuntu. If that didn't work, I'd try something even lighter, maybe like TinyMe or AntiX ;)
