Hi there,

I'm a long time linux only user (about 8 years) and am now using ubuntu with kde desktop. :guitar:

I've seen a post about "Vista to Ubuntu - the switch and back, sadly..." (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=657417) and I thought I'd talk about my (very bad) experience switching from ubuntu to vista.

Now I really wanted to try this new vista thing, I have an old laptop that could be used to make the switch so I didn't have to worry about vista wiping out my entire current installation.

I first looked for a livecd. No luck with google as all I could find were torrent links of dubious legality. All right, then I went to microsoft.com to look for a trial version, livecd or not and, well, believe it or not, but none of the microsoft.com links would work here (using konqueror).

It seems the only way to try vista is to buy it, so off to my online reseller fnac.com (a french company). I think I'm looking for a non-oem version because I want to try vista on an old pc before moving it to a more useful laptop, should vista prove to be any good. Here is what I found :

- Windows Vista Édition Intégrale : 335 € = 500 $
- Microsoft Office Edition Intégrale 2007 : 949 € = 2000 $

I bought an entire new pc (asus eee) for 500 $ two months ago and it's now running kubuntu. I'm not anywhere close to paying hundreds of bucks just to try vista, this I can tell you, so it is a no-go.

So that's it for this test, I did not have to go too far to be very disappointed.
I'm back to ubuntu but I'm willing to try again as soon as I can download a trial/livecd version with office and stuff and if they fix their site of course. :lolflag:
I just hope when that day come everything will work out of the box, at least.

---
Still willing to give this vista thing a shot.

Someone, do not recall who, said once:

Computer programs are only long lists of 1 and 0
Why should you pay for?

I know I know

not everybody can actually bring the masses of 1 and 0 to a working order

and Ubuntu also needs an millionaire to be free:lolflag:
just joking

The famous lines from the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day, are so apropos, here :

Hasta la VISTA, baby!

Dear Yannick,
I bought a computer from Sears (Acer) that came with Vista installed for $600.00 (Canadian). I then proceeded to install Ubuntu & Kubuntu.

If I may ask a ?, WHAT OS came installed on your new computer? (I bought an entire new pc (asus eee) for 500 $ two months ago and it's now running kubuntu. I'm not anywhere close to paying hundreds of bucks just to try vista.)

I'm also thinking of installing XP 64 (but on another hard drive).

Please give more info.

The eee pc comes with a asus/xandros distro.

So, now that I can make a fair comparison between ubuntu and windows vista (having none of them preinstalled), vista seems very poor by the simple fact that I cannot try it without paying some hundred bucks first.

And kubuntu it is :)
