I'm using Gutsy and every time I try to use a program that needs Java, I get told I need to install Runtime Environment, but as I already have it installed, (and I've checked numerous times: It's definitely installed,) I end up on a wild goose chase looking for links to install plugins which inevitably lead me back to the same wesbites which tell me how to install Java ...

what the???

I really am lost with this one ...

can anyone help?

Cheers, Mel

The Java that is in the repositories will work so un-install what you have and install the Java6 from the repositories.

As a matter of fact you should be able to just install the ubuntu-restricted-extras and it will install Java and a few other restricted packages like ms fonts, gstreamer plugins etc. If that does not do it then install anything with java6 in it and it will also pick up other dependencies.
