Have look at some of the things the good old bsod has appeared on....

Some of those look photo-shopped. Plus, WinXP is a very stable system. I would attribute these to...
1) some third-party writing some crappy program that some other third-party used for their automated whatever, and it had a loop-hole in it that allowed a crash that WinXP couldn't handle for some reason other than dumping out debug message.
2) Some smart-*** hacker running around with a wireless laptop, hacking into the system and creating a BSOD (either by faking it or by causing a system crash) just to perpetuate the "Windows is totally unstable" philosophy everyone seems to assume.
In the years I've used WinXP, I've never gotten a bsod. Granted, all the times I've used it, the various service packs & security tweaks have already been applied (either by me when I used it personally, or by the IT folks at my job). But still, I'd say it's pretty solid.
Not to say it's as peppy or as good as Ubuntu, but...
