View Full Version : Will we ever see an "Opulent Opus" kernel?

Well, it occurred to me that since as Linux users our mascot is a penguin and our kernel releases are named after animals, then why not have a kernel release named after another penguin; specifically "Opus," a cartoon character by "Berke Breathed," whose comic strip "Bloom County" has been running in newspapers around the country for decades; and why not an LTS version while we're at it?

One of the more humorous instantiations of this character is one in which he dresses in Drag (put's on a dress and pearls); so I thought of the name "Opulent Opus" to refer to this instance of the character. It makes sense to me, since the kernel nicknames are always two words in which the first letters of each word are the same; such as in Feisty Fawn; Gusty Gibbon, etc.

**I know I'm going to get flamed for this; so go ahead, give me you're best shot!

Below are some links I found on Google that I thought would illustrate this idea:

http://alumnus.caltech.edu/~lin/picts/opus.gif

Oh, and since penguins and specifically Opus like squid, how about a "Squishy Squid" kernel?

Considering that each new release is the next letter up in the alphabet, and Ubuntu release twice yearly I don't think we're going to see any O release until October 2011. Try posting nearer the time and they might take up your suggestion. :D

By the way, there is a wiki for brain-storming for future release code-names:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames

"Opulent" is already on there, but "Opus" is not (and probably wouldn't get accepted since it's the name of a character instead of the name of an actual animal).

As you can see, there is no lack of ideas for future Ubuntu code-names!

Actually I don't think we would be able to name it that due to copyright issues.

Well an Opulent Opus could be a musical composition, then we could just unofficially use the Opus image or put "Tux" in a dress and give him "Bob the Bobcat Cat" for a sidekick!

I thinkk you're confusing the kernel with the Ubuntu dsitribution version.

We would probably be more likely to see a Trusty Tux or Perky Penguin.

I think you're right Mad_Dawg; but I'd love a counter culture name for a change. And BTW, UnRkiSt is right. I was confusing the kernel with the Distro. I stand corrected, when I can stand.

if someone wants to write the cartoonist about letting Linux borrow Opus...Well,give it a go...
he might be up for it,you never know.

sadly i dont think it would happen because of copyright issues, and even if we got permission, the name woulden't be completely free and all that.

and not all newspapers get opus, i myself never knew about it until our newspaper started putting it on the sunday newspaper comics

Perhaps we could offer Mr. Breathed free Ubuntu Linux for life in exchange for using Opus? We would be giving him something valuable and yet free thereby avoiding the philosophical issues.

Just a thought..

Lol. As I was reading this thread, I was hoping it was you who resurrected it from the dead.
