Hey. I am running an nVidia 6600 (256 MB RAM) on Ubuntu 5.04. It is x86, but I have an AMD AThlon 64 bit 3000+ processor.

Anyway, so whenever I run a 3d game from the repositories my computer freezes after about 3-5 minutes. This happens with Neverball, and also Nexuiz (which I got from liflg.org). I have Neverball run in a window at 800 x 600 resolution, but the same problem doesn't happen when I run Tuxracer at 640 x 480 in fullscreen. However, I run Nexuiz at 1024 x 768 and it freezes after a while, which is odd. I can run it with a bit better FPS at the same resolution on Windows XP Pro, and It won't freeze at 1280 x 1024.

However, when I run games like Steam in Cedega, I don't crash as often. I play Counter Strike, Half-Life 1, Deathmatch Classic, and Team Fortress Classic. I play at 1024 x 768 reso and it only crashes sometimes in CS. I play Source games too, at 800 x 600 with mid to high settings. CS:S seems to crash more frequently but I only play with bots so that is understandable. HL2 I have yet to try on Linux.

This seems to only persistantly happen on native linux games... any idea how to fix this or how to avoid the freezing?

here are my glxgears FPS:

john@kubuntu:~$ glxgears
16602 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3320.400 FPS
19615 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3923.000 FPS
19628 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3925.600 FPS
19620 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3924.000 FPS
19535 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3907.000 FPS
