View Full Version : Breezy + 1 = The Dapper Drake!

Mark Shuttleworth just announced the name of breezy+1 on the mailing lists:

In keeping with tradition, it's time to name the next+1 release of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 6.04(ish) will be special, because as a community we are going to
commit to supporting it for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the
server. In Montreal (October 30-Nov 6, all hackers welcome, companies
send your developers, chip in and define it 'cos we all have to live
with it, details at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBelowZero etc) we will
be figuring out what changes are needed to the release process to ensure
we can deliver on that commitment. We're likely to want to be a bit more
conservative in the feature goals, and freeze a little longer.

It's 6.04 that will be up against Windows Vista, so let's make it a
zinger and give folks a real choice.

The 6.04 release will be the culmination of 2 years hard work, with
Warty, Hoary and Breezy having set the style and the pace. We want it to
represent the fruit of that labour - it brings to a close this first
major cycle of development for Ubuntu. It will be a release that people
can plan for, participate in and build solutions on top of. It will get
even more polish than we put into Breezy, so we think it deserves a name
that reflects that polish.

And so, after much deliberation, it has been decided that 6.04 will be
known during development as:

The Dapper Drake

I'm sure the Ubuntu Artwork Team will have a field day ;-)

As usual, the "dapper" repository will be opened after the release of
Breezy. Till then, let's focus all of our energy on the upcoming release!

Don't worry, it doesn't
Ubuntu will continue to have new releases every 6 months.

Where did you get the idea about the 2 years anyway?

Edit:
And of course:
Yay for Dapper Drake!

It's fairly easy to misinterpret this as "2 years from now"

Which confirms my opinion that Ubuntu is poo..

seriously, Breezy is a big let down for me, I hope Dapper will be better.. e.g. maybe they won't break palm syncing on purpose again by importing a development version of gnome-pilot which is known not to work.

I've been using it since day one, all in all Breezy feels much less stable than Hoary and the progress in terms of features, all the really interested me in Breezy was Mono, Beagle and MonoDevelop - all of which work just fine.

it's not a bad distro, it's just not all it could have been - I have high hopes for Dapper though, bugs will be filed.. trust me.

<ot>It always baffles me that people who hate ubuntu are still active members here. I don't want you to leave or anything, I like your posts, and I like the fact that theres someone here from other camps (you're a fedora guy right?) to keep us straight and remind us of things that we're mising, etc, but I'm just curious as to what about the community keeps you around? I know we're a rockin' community and all!</ot>

But yeah, as ubuntovec said, don't judge a distro by its pre-releases.

I was literally shocked when they upgraded gnome-pilot to the _known_ broken release, just before the RC release of breezy.. that was just a big let down in terms of testing, it made me promptly wipe Breezy off my drive in shame.

I'll let you in on a secret, the plan is to start testing Breezy/Dapper in a xen environment - thus I needed to do this to get a working environment from which to start. (please note Fedora did the same stupid thing for FC4.. and they still haven't fixed it.. that's even worse given that the bug was filed ages ago)

Don't judge a distro until it has been officially released.

Oh, and to get back on topic..... When I first read the email from Mark, I thought, The Dapper Drake, what a stupid name. Then I thought about it, and I like it. Dragons are cool right? I come from a RPG playing background so Dragon was the first thing I thought of. Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake

Anyways, rock on, even if they mean Duck, which is fine, it will always be Dragon to me:) The Dapper Drake, (insert napoleon dynamite)sweet(end napoleon dynamite)!

Oh and for the record, Hoary is cool(I use it at work and home), but I had less issues with Warty. Then again I did not do quite as much with Warty so that might be why. And, I could sync my palm in Breezy off the liveCD and it did not work in Hoary(I got it to work with some hacking) out of the box, so not sure whats up with your palm, but mine worked.

Yeah I'd have to agree with the name thing...
Reminds me of mandrake (now mandriva)...

Not sure what I'd call it... but maybe it would be better to be consistent...

If you look at the far eastern mythology Dragons are a powerful almost goldlike creature and friend of humans.

I think this is the reason why the name sticks to it because of the "human" part of it (ubuntu being..humanity to others).

Draper Drake..Six O Four...or whatever name they would choose for it...as long as it is Linux and as long as it will be supported and there will be less bugs...I'm for it.

Lets see, since Ubuntu is based on making a polished, Gnome desktop, and sets their release dates around the Gnome release dates, thereby being a totally Gnome-centric distro, my magic 8-ball says "Outlook not so good.". I like Ubuntu specifically because it does NOT use KDE. Were it to be a KDE based distro, I would ignore it as I do the other KDE based distros.

I know the animal name stuff is pretty set in stone, but I think it would be nice to simply have a numerical system for the versions. I think if you associate the name with an animal, it's good to keep it the same, because people associate that with a mascot, and this bothers me that that is not the case here (not to mention the name of the current release.. no offense, but Hoary Hedgehog?.. that's just horrid). Maybe make it coincide with the Gnome version it's based on (yeah, it's just an idea, and likely a junky one at that).

Hmmm, Ubuntu 2.12...

But there is a numerical system: Hoary is 5.04, Breezy is 5.10,
Daffy Duck ... sorry, Dapper Drake will be 6.04.

My ShipIt CDs say "5.04", not "Hoary", so it seems the animals are more like nicknames, with the version numbers giving the actual & official name.

That being said, I kinda like the animal system; and THAT being said, I wonder if the six months between releases is too short time: Even though there's three years' support many would like to have the "latest and greates", and six months is too often for them to reinstall their operating system?

You are right on the naming thing. The cute nicknames are just for fun and the "official" name is Ubuntu x.xx as in year.month of release.

I believe the reason for extending the support time to 3 years is because of a desire to make Ubuntu practical for the business desktop and server world as well where the OS can be installed and only receive security updates for a long period of time without needing the functionality or eye candy of full version upgrades/updates. The six months schedule, however, is to make the latest software (or nearly) available for those who desire it in a stablized package more frequently.

AFAIK, apple are moving to intel/i386 technology for their chips, but the OS will still be very tightly wrapped in with their hardware and not able to install on regular i386 hardware. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the plan from what I've read.

Hi all

In the 6.04 Dapper Drake annoucement Mark S kicked the ball off in the Ubuntu vs Vista debates.

If I was an Ubuntu developer looking to seriously take on Vista in the desktop stakes I would be looking at two main areas:
1. Digital Cameras
2. Digital video

I think these two are the two biggest areas for the home desktop with ubuntu doesn't do well at present. After all the biggest uses for home pcs are:
1. MP3s - but that's taken care of with many options in Linuxland
2. Office documents - Open Office v2
3. Email - Thunderbird

which leaves photo and video. Soccer moms and grandmas love the way in which they can plug their camera into windows and up pops a little wizard to help transfer the files. People can easily preview and print images or email them to friends. Its a sure bet that Vista is going to make digital video just as easy.

Given that the eariler Ubuntu releases have taken care of most of the hardware issues I think that the the secret to taking on windows will be photos and video.

I have used 3 different digital cameras (an Olympus, a Sony Powershot and one i dont remember) with my computer. As soon as i plug any of them in, there is a "little wizard" that pops up and says "Import fotos?". Works pretty well :)

Yes, I'm aware of that one, and it works too, except that some people won't understand the connection to release date, and will wonder what the big deal is about what they see, numerically, as an incremental update... 5.04 to 5.10 being a .6 difference, when most associate a major release with the major number in the version changing (witness a post in this very thread for evidence). I also understand that using the Gnome version would be a similar situation as they have made very large changes in the last 2 releases, and had very minor version increments. I don't know what the answer to my mind's dillemna is.. I'm just being gabby :).

I dunno about you, but gphoto does that very nicely with my Canon Powershot. Hell it even pulls pics and vids in the same move :D

That aside, Mark's email got me really charged up for Drake. Its really great that he is still very commited and charged up about this project. I'll prolly start running it within' a month of the repos opening so I can submit bug reports and try to fix stuff. AFAIK, the next 6 months will see a lot of good stuff, like X going fully modular, the next release of GNOME, and the Xen project (I had to plug it 'cause some of the guys who are working on it go to my school :D)

Since this will be the big "official" release, I hope that Dapper+1 will finally have a new style. That the brown will be traded for the cool dark brown we see in the Breezy usplash.

When I booted into Breezy for the first time and I swore I was in Hoary (except for the fonts) I realized that its less like each release is a major release of the OS, and more like each release is small branches on the way to a major OS release every two years or so. We just get to peek in the whole time.

Thats why the themes, and boot splashes, and noises, and boot noise and whatever "style" Ubuntu has now will stay the same through Dapper probably (sorry those that think the brown will go away soon).

Since Dapper is that big first release, I hope that after the duck we can get a new desktop!

It's not even .6, it's .06. :)

You are quite correct, thanks :). I must have been half asleep at the keyboard.

There's still hope for Breezy. The release schedule (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BreezyReleaseSchedule) says the artwork deadline isn't till the 29th.

But how can Mark then go on Oprah to jump on the sofa screaming how in love he is with Ubuntu??

heh... with enough tweaking, you can get the Drop Dead Gorgeous to go parallel to Breezy... with a small line connecting them
