I've been messing with this for a while now on two different computers without much luck. I verified that at least one of the computers does have a working serial port (but the IR blaster does nothing) with cutecom or minicom.
So...I'm thinking of trying the usb-uirt thing. Something similar to this...

I don't care about controlling the computer with the remote since I'd like to get some kind of Bluetooth keyboard for that eventually, but just need this thing to change the DirecTV channels so I can automatically record things.
Anyone have any comments, problems, or good things to say about the usb-uirt? Does it set up easily? This serial port stuff getting frustrating, and I have configured these things before - mostly in my Windows days. :)
Good, bad, whatever, I'd like to hear any comments on this.
