View Full Version : How can I decorate my folders?

Hi everyone. I have found that by right clicking on a folder I created, for pictures for example, I can choose properties>emblems and check off a small decorative emblem like a heart or a check mark etc to put a visual distinction on the folder. However, most of the emblems are very small and difficult to tell what they are. I am wondering how I would get larger emblems or how to apply a small picture to the surface of the folder. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!:)

How about changing the folder icon itself to distinguish it from others.
Right click on the folder --> click on top left folder icon --> select new folder icon (/usr/share/app-install/icons)

And you can stretch the folder icon: "rmb click on the folder > stretch" and change its size

you could also install another icon theme and go into its directory in ~/.icons (hidden directory in your home folder) and modify it or its emblems.

Thanks for the response BOrka. I don't find an option for "stretch." I find an option to resize the folders to 150% or some other value. I would like to make the emblems bigger without necessarily making the folders bigger. Here's a screen shot of what I'm looking at. :)

There is option Stretch Icons only for the folders on your desktop :)
As for the "attached" file you gave ... you must click on "attach" when you are writing the comment, select the file you want to attach and click Upload ;)

Greetings,
If you would like to use a picture to represent a file, for example an album cover to represent the file for the album instead of a generic file folder you can do so this way, as described in the Ubuntu help file.
1. Select the file or folder that you want to change.
2. Choose File ▸ Properties. The properties window for the item is displayed.
3. On the Basic tabbed section, click on
the current Icon. ](The folder symbol in the upper left hand corner) A Select custom
icon dialog is displayed.
4. Use the Select custom icon dialog to choose
the icon (or photo of your choice) to represent the file or folder.
5. Click Close to close the properties
dialog.
I have used this method for ripped dvd's and albums to show the original art work. Hope this helps!:)

Thanks very much. I tried your instructions and was able to change the appearance of the folder. However, although I selected a photo to represent the folder, it displays a piece of paper instead. Would it make a difference if it is a jpg versus a png file?

Sadly I have never tried Kubuntu so I do not know, I am new to Ubuntu myself and just stumbled upon this while I was setting up my video and music files.
When you right click the folder and choose properties, is there a a help icon in the lower left corner of your properties dialog box? If so you may want to check there, that's how I figured it out.
Let me know if you get it working, good luck! :)

I have used both jpg and png. One extra thing I do that may help is that I keep the picture in the file that I have it representing. It shouldn't make a difference but it may be worth a shot.
If all else fails I again recommend clicking the help icon in the lower left corner of the properties dialog box.
I will try to post a screen shot of some of my folders. Let me know if you get it working and good luck! :)

You can stretch folders in browser. Instead of right-clicking it, just mark it, then go to the Edit menu and select Stretch icon.

Greetings,
Here is a screen shot of what my music folder looks like with pictures in place of folder icons. I do not have all of my albums transfered over yet but this will still give you an idea of what I'm talking about. (And yes, I KNOW I have weird tastes in music! :)) If you would like me to post some screen shots of how I did it, just let me know.
I hope this helps! :)

HI! Thanks for the reply!
I'm using Xubuntu, not Kubuntu, but couldn't find it. I searched in help and nothing... Perhaps Xfce doesn't have that option...

Whoops! Sorry about that, that's what I get for reading the forums without a cup a coffee! :)
I'm sorry you haven't had any luck, maybe someone else on here can help you out? Anyone?
