I use Ubuntu Hoary and would like to install ethereal 10.12, but I can only get 10.10 with Hoary. Is it possible to add a breezy repository so I can get the new version and all its dependensies?

You would need to switch over to Breezy totally in order for you to use all of their updates for the repos and dependensies.
Breezy has packages that are not stable enought to run on hoary or warty because of their security issues.

Does it really mean that if I want an updated version of ethereal I need to reinstall ubuntu? It seems ridiculous that you need to reinstall a whole OS just because you need to update a single small program. Are there othere distributions of Linux that works better?

No, you don't have to reinstall, just upgrade when you feel it is stable enough for you to work with.

Ok but where do I find any info on how to upgrade? Can't find any info on which repositories to add if I want the updated packages and updated programs?
