Hey guys i got a macbookpro for christmas, Im going to follow the installation guide for installing ubuntu with OSX. But, should i use Ubuntu 7.10 amd6 or Ubuntu 7.10 i386? Is the 7.10 amd6 the 64 bit?? Are there big software differences with the two versions?

Hey dude!
I got a macbook early this year!
ahen so yea, my mac is a i386 cpu and isnt a 64 bit system. Id imagine yours is some what similar.
How are you going to run it???
Ive tried parallels on mine but ive had problems with it.
I also tried "Q" which is free and works, but it is a lil slow.
Kind Regards

Nope, current Macbook and MacBook Pro 3rd generation are both using Core 2 Duo Intel CPUs, which are 64-bit wide.
The issue of whether it is best to use 32-bit Ubuntu or 64-bit Ubuntu is controversial at present and there appears to be no scientific way of resolving it, actually.

I used 64-bit GG on my MacBook Pros (2.33 GHz, second generation).

I also chose to install the 64-bit version of 7.10 and am satisfied. I'm sure some of the problems I occasionally have with 3rd party apps (mainly games) that I've downloaded are caused by it, but overall I enjoy the speed increase. I did, however choose to switch kernels (check my signature) and I'm very happy with the additional streamlining and power saving that my custom tickless kernel gives.

I've tried both, and the difference isn't really worth it. I mean it is still a dual 2.x GHz so the .5 second saved when opening inkscape... However, if you like to help debug some of the programs that are adapting 64 bit support, I'm sure they'd be glad to have your assisstance.
