My parents are thinking of buying me a MacBook Pro. My question is, the Core2 Duo being a 64-bit CPU, will it support 32-bit. I'm more comfortable when all the software is available for the platform.
And, also, maybe this is a nooby question, but will the ubuntu installation guide work for Kubuntu, also?

According to this guide, 32 bit should work - you just won't get the speed benefits of the 64 bit processor.

Just to throw my 2 cents in, 64 bit systems work very well, and the compatibility libraries allow many 32 bit apps to run just fine. I'm not saying there aren't occasional kinks, but it's getting better and is enjoyable now.

Hey Rog-Mahal!

Is there a clean and easy way to dual boot ubuntu and os x on my macbook? Ive been looking and do seem a bit put off.

Kind Regards

The best way (so I've heard) is to use rEFIt for OSX, use it to free up some harddisk space and install Ubuntu on that. I singleboot Ubuntu myself, but I may attempt to create a small OSX partition for firmware updates etc. It should be interesting to try the rEFIt method in reverse.

I would recommend searching the forums and doing some research, it looks like there are some pretty common pitfalls. Good luck!

just found out that airport extreme will not work with ubuntu! that sucks!

Is it just that the client doesn't work or you are not able to use it at all?

well apple havent released the spec for airport so no one can make drivers sadly.
Ive taken to using the ethernet connection which proves to be problematic! it connects to the net just great but the whole system will just stall a few minutes in :(

kind regards

Just like 32-bit architectures run 16-bit apps, 64-bit can run both 32-bit and 16-bit.
