View Full Version : New Professional Games

I just know I'm going to offend people here but I'm wondering if there have been any major professional games released natively for linux since doom3?
I ask about professional games because like films I like my games to have good production values and it is just outside of the scope of the open source community to produce anything to rival a multi-million pound game.
Please tell me I'm wrong and Microsofts cornering of the PC market isn't complete - thanks to some unfair play with the XBox and 360.

Unreal Tournament 2003 works great. I have it.

As far as I know the Linux version of Quake Wars has been released a while ago...

Quake Wars is out, and ran nice for me. There is also X3: The Reunion coming soon. Otherwise.. Umm, pretty limited. Sadly. If FPS type games are not your bag, and you like higher production games, then Linux is not your gaming platform.

Well, I have high hopes for the future. The linux platform increased greatly over the 2007 year. Hopefully, rising Ubuntu and other *Nix populations will lead to a few gaming companies to produce for Linux in addition to Windows (and sometimes Mac). A few mainstream RTS's or RPG's will cause more more to join/switch from Windows, and thus more games will be made. All there needs to be is a little initial nudge and a snowball effect will lead the rest.
What I really want: Spore to come out on *Nix

I had X3: Reunion on Windows, it had a rough start but after the patches were released its quite good.

It seems to me that it's the XBox which is killing game production for Linux. From what you've said the games that get released are the ones that arn't XBox such as X3: reunion.
I don't see how this situation can be rectified until the Linux community fights back in some way. It seems to me you will always be on the back foot trying to keep up with programs such as wine trying to translate DirectX programs into OpenGl. I think Linux needs some legal clout.
PS I agree that the Linux OS has gone from strength to strength which is why I can't go back to Windows (even for games) but I am becoming an increasingly frustrated gamer.

Ankh (http://www.rune-soft.com/englisch/Projektseiten/ankh/ankh.html) is out, and Ankh 2 is supposed to be coming as I recall. You can also see some of that Company's other games (http://www.rune-soft.com/product.php) which are interesting.
Another place that has put out some decent ones is GarageGames (http://www.garagegames.com/demos/browse/game/?platform=linux&sort=popular) And last, but not least is Linux Game Publishing (http://www.linuxgamepublishing.com/) which publishes older Windows Games as new Linux Games...
And lets not forget Basilisk Games (http://basiliskgames.com/book1.htm) with their new addition. As well as several smaller companies that add decent games now and then. Make sure to support them to encourage them to keep going!

well, despite the Xbox and Microsoft platforms pounding Linux, I think the unavoidable increase in *Nix use after the Vista disaster is going to inevitably lead to at least one or two more studios becoming *Nix friendly. And, like it's been said, an RPG or RTS is a much needed draw for some gamers.

http://www.linuxgames.com/ is a good place to check too. Yesterday a game was re-released as free (dark horizons: lore) and it's quite fun (and well-made).

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (http://www.enemyterritory.com/) is one of the latest commercial games that also work in Linux (released about two months ago). It was already mentioned, but it is really worth checking out. Runs very well in Linux and particularly Ubuntu. :)

A good game is Unreal Tournament 3. This game has it all from superb graphics to very outstanding gameplay. I suggest you buy it.

There is no Linux client for UT3 yet. It has been delayed without a release date (because of some legal issues). They are apparently re-writing the code without the problematic parts.

i run unreal tournament 2004 with no problems. just the installation procedure is not as easy as it seams.
I had to do this to install it.
some of my notes:
copy the sh file from the disk to the desktop and launch it in terminal like sh linux-install.sh and use mount taskbar utility to remount the new disk inserted.

After betatesting Savage2 I also got to recommend it. It ran quite alright on my poor Radeon 9600 mobility and the game looks real nice. The gameplay is very unique, and it's gonna only cost 29$!
I really recommend it.

Another game that no one has mentioned is Quake4.
Also, some openGL games run perfectly well on wine, such as Prey.

Any news on the linux client of savage 2? I have been signed up for testing in a long time and got picked to do so - but it seems it takes some time for the linux client.

Official word is that they're still working on the OpenGL renderer. Rumor says it will be out early in january :)
(perfect timing, I'll be back home and have access to my desktop computer then!)

CRAP~! i was wondering about this as well. Guess ill be buying this puppy as well.
I have prey and it is running fast and awsome but one thing i really hate is I CAN'T ENABLE 5.1 AUDIO! only stereo. Another thing-(I thought i said one problem)If I launch from start, it will complain about missing opengl or something of "could'nt load default.cfg" but if I launch it from desktop or winefile executing the prey.exe, its fine.

How can you buy Windows games for running them on Linux ? I would be worried to sped 50 bucks for a game that is not supported on my platform.
Just a thought...

There is an application database at the Wine web site (http://winehq.org/) that lists various games and how well they run in Wine. Personally, I only buy games if the developer offers a native Linux version (don't mind if if is for download only). I used to buy 2-5 games a month when I still had Windows, and now it seems to come down to one every half year. ;) It's okay, though, I play the ones I do buy/have more intensely now and it saves mobey, too. (I do buy some games for PSP and DS.)

For something a bit different, one of the ones I forgot before was the Penumbra Games by Frictional Games (http://www.frictionalgames.com/games/). They look sort of interesting, and are not just another FPS. And any company putting games out in Linux should be supported. So stop by and take a look. There are free Demos for some of them. They also have a new one (http://www.paradoxplaza.com/penumbra/) coming out soon.

There is a whole ocean of mods out there for the original NWN, I guess you're tired of the gameengine and not of the content for the game :)

lol, I suppose that would be more accurate. To be forthright, I have been working too much and playing no games. Last one I played was my girlfriend's Guitar Hero for a few minutes.
