How long should it spend on 'Installing Firefox Plugins' , apart from this lack of progress, this seems like nice work and a great idea \\:D/

Edit...its finished now, nice work!

This is the single best thing I have seen in the community outside of backports and the forum. Amazing. I'll ask for a third party spot if you want. Amazing.

Thank you very much, I'll ask people in the know and see if someone can make a good deb for it.

Thanks again!

WARNING: This is not to be used with Breezy as it replaced your apt/sources.list with hoary repositories and updates stuff from them. Good thing I noticed that early and could cancel the process. I don't think that my Breezy setup would have liked getting updates from Hoary :-)

Suggestion for the author: It should detect the version/release and use the appropriate repositories.

Note to myself: I now have to find a way to get the original breezy sources.list back :-(

Other than that, amazing app !!

This is not "breezy ready" t this time but if you want to use Easy Ubuntu with breezy just open the file conf/sources.list and change all "hoary" by "breezy".

The previous sources.list is saved at /etc/apt/sources.list_backup
All the changed files (esd.conf, icons, ...) are saved like old-file.ext_backup

The (hopefully) easy guide to EasyUbuntu. Two suggested methods:

Graphical Method:
-----------------------------------------

Save the following to your desktop:
http://placelibre.ath.cx/keyes/downloads/EasyUbuntu-2.1.tar.gz

Right click on the EasyUbuntu-2.1.tar.gz icon and select "Extract here"

double click the resulting EasyUbuntu folder
double click the EasyUbuntu script in the EasyUbuntu folder

the following might pop up
http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=2347&stc=1

select Run

you may want to remove EasyUbuntu-2.1.tar.gz and the EasyUbuntu folder from your desktop when you are finished

Text Method:
-----------------------------------------------

Open a terminal.

Download and extract it:

wget http://placelibre.ath.cx/keyes/downloads/EasyUbuntu-2.1.tar.gz
tar xvzf EasyUbuntu-2.1.tar.gz

go to the new directory and run it :

cd EasyUbuntu
./EasyUbuntu

Enjoy the convenience.

Nice app,

Encouraging people to use skype though :( Ubuntu should start pushing some GPL alternatives like openwengo, they seem to be doing some exciting stuff with that, writing kde and gtk front ends for it.

Anyway back to the topic, a really nice app. How do you add audio support in nautilus? Could you post the code for it?

Cheers,

Jon

Skype is not Open Source but this is a "most wanted" app !
Many peoples have a Skype account and want to speak with Skype also on Linux. Easy Ubuntu allow that.

The source code ?
This a bash script so just open "EasyUbuntu" and "eu" files with a text editor and you will see the source code.

The templates for gettext (the PO file) can be found in the /lang/fr directory.

Quit Firefox
In a terminal type: sudo cp -R /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/res_backup /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/res
Enter your password if asked
Restart Firefox
I actually like the new forms, they fit well into my GTK-Theme (Milke).

pgmario
September 15th, 2005, 08:18 AM
I forgot to mention that the above solution will only make your forms and buttons the way they were. To change the icons back, replace the second step with:
sudo cp /usr/share/pixmaps/mozilla-firefox_backup.png /usr/share/pixmaps/mozilla-firefox.png
sudo cp /usr/share/pixmaps/mozilla-firefox_backup.xpm /usr/share/pixmaps/mozilla-firefox.xpm
sudo cp /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/icons/default_backup.xpm /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/icons/default.xpm
sudo cp /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/chrome/icons/default/default_backup.xpm /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/chrome/icons/default/default.xpm
sudo cp /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/icons/document_backup.png /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/icons/document.png
It might be necessary to log out and in again afterwards.

Thanks! The icons worked but I must've overwritten the backup of the forms somehow. Uninstalling and reinstalling mozilla-firefox sorted it, but...

Could someone select to completely remove "mozilla-firefox" from Synaptic (without clicking ok - obviously!) and tell me which dependent packages it took with it, because reinstalling didn't put them back on - thanks!

First beta for Easy Kubuntu (English and French version , I have only test the french version for the moment):

(Only for Hoary)
Easy Kubuntu allow you to:

Hi there
I decided to give your easyubuntu a try in Breezy as it had things I wanted to try to install, so I gave it a go, I tried it twice, and got errors each time..

Here is a log of the second time (didn't think to save a log the first time).. I'm no expert (actually I'm a real newbie at Linux and Ubuntu) but I dont think things went very well, apart from the errors I see in the log posted below, I also got 2 ERROR windows as well (these windows I got on both times)...

ERROR 1
The application"wnck-applet" has quit unexpectedly

ERROR 2
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFID:GNOME_WindowListApplet"

Have you ever installed the flashing taskbar patch and marked libwnck as not to be upgraded?
If so, you could try
sudo echo libwnck16 install | sudo dpkg --set-selections
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libwnck16
Could be that I'm absolutely wrong, but it's worth a try.

I just read in another forum that the w32codecs and RealPlayer were taken out of the backports repositories.
That's probably due to new packages being built with GCC4, the article says.
If the codecs and the player can't be installed at the moment, chances are it's got nothing to do with Easy Ubuntu.
The suggested method to install the codecs anyway is to download a .deb here (ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/pool/main/w/w32codecs/w32codecs_20050412-0.0_i386.deb) and install them manually with dpkg. RealPlayer can still be downloaded from their official website (http://www.real.com/linux/).

Yes Easy Ubuntu use backports for w32codecs and real. If backports have problems, Easy Ubuntu doesn't work !

For Skype, does this program add the Skype official Debian repository, or does it just download the current version when the script is run?

It's just that I think it may be better to add the extra repository, as that way, Skype will be kept up to date more easily for average users.

It adds the official Skype repository.

In next release (2.3):
Hoary support will be lost, 2.3 will be a "for Breezy only" release. Why? Because I don't have Hoary installed.

* Use totem_gstreamer (instead of totem_xine in 2.2) with new codecs included in Breezy
* Use the brand new Totem Firefox Plugin (included by Default in Breezy, Mozilla Mplayer plug-in removed).
* New Windows binary codecs, RealPlayer and Java install process (because they are removed from the Extras repository).
* Russian translation (thanks Alexander!).
* Finnish translation (thanks Jyri-Petteri!)
* Better German and Danish translations.
* Maybe DMA support (but it seems to be dangerous when users (like me) have VIA or AMD chipsets, more infos?).

Suggestions and infos are welcome.

hi,

i was just wondering, as a beginner, i installed hoary and spent 3 hours last nite trying to get something that will play real player videos and windows media player video streams to play in firefox. i even tried installing that extention "media player connectivity" but i can't seem to get anything to play. in other words, i've already tried installing and downloading stuff. if i use this easy ubuntu, will that be able to install everything correctly and fix my problem? do i need to uninstall things first? i don't get any errors- i just go to a web page with a video and nothing ever happens. no pop up, no errors, it just sits there.

what about the post above that mentions the w32codecs and realplayer being removed anyway? is that replaced or now will this script not be able to work anyway?

also, the realplayer from real.com is realplayer 10 (RealPlayer10GOLD) but when you get the script from apt it's looking for some file starting with rp8_******* something. soooo... i see both of them under sound and video, but when i click on them, nothing happens.

i'm really hoping your easy script will be able to help me out..i should have found this post BEFORE i tried installing all this...

thanks for any advice,
netwench

Installed the Breezy preview.
Today tried to run EasyUbuntu. I have the impression things did not succeeded well - for example no realplayer to find (via "updatedb && locate real"). Other things like fglrx driver or the original firefox icons are OK.
Trying to rerun EasyUbuntu make it stuck (near to 100% cpu, no progress anymore) once it has giving the message installing Firefox plugins.
Erasing the EasyUbuntu directory, downloading, expanding and running it again still gives the same problem.
Any hints?

Thanks for your help mangar!
I will try this before merging.

The big problem is with "Marillat"! Packages from this repository are designed for Debian and can break your Ubuntu.
Note: Libdvdcss is already installed by apt (comming from the "Extras"). Duplicate in your code.

I will read your code and merge with the main Easy Ubuntu next days. Please add -pseudo for unofficial releases (like EasyUbuntu2.3-mangar.tar.bz2).

Thanks a lot. Improvements and comments are welcomed!

Alessio, translations are make by users. I you want an Italian translation translate the PO file lang/fr/EasyUbuntu.po

Replace French messages by Italian like this:

msgid "The English text here!"
msgstr "The Italian translation here!"

and send me the file :-)

Please report any bug! My goal is a very stable and useful Easy Ubuntu for the Breezy release!

Everything worked here on a fresh breezy install except nvidia drivers. Doesn't look like xorg.conf was modified at all.. should driver now read "nvidia" instead of "nv"?
xorg.conf looks like this...
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.

# again, run the following commands:
#
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom

What repo do you use for the codecs?

I ask because some might not exist for Breezy.

Is there a way you could use this one:

ftp://cipherfunk.org/pub/packages/ubuntu/pool/main/w/w32codecs/w32codecs_20050412-0unofficialubuntu2_i386.deb

For w32codec?

Thanks. Because, without that, Breezy will be much harder.

the 2.2 link (for hoary) forwards to a forum, and the 2.3 (for breezy) works just fine.

it says not to use 2.3 for hoary so I dont want to do that :)

Does anyone have a link to the 2.2 version? I am interested in giving this a go.

EDIT:

found it..and it has been installing the FF plugins for well over 30 minutes now!! had to plug my laptop in to charge it :)

i had already installed java, acroread, and flash prior to running easy ubuntu, so i hope this doesn't bork those up or vicey versy...

a statusbar would be great...maybe a package list, a total/remaining bar...something to let the user know it's doing something and what it is doing....

This patch includes:
* lang/ja/EasyUbuntu.po - Japanese message catalog file
* conf/sources.list.ja - includes repository provides Japanese-specific packages
* eu - If conf/sources.list.${LANG:0:2} exists, it is copied instead of conf/sources.list.

I'm happy that my patch be applied to next version.

Hello,
I installed yesterday ubuntu breezy badger. Everything was OK. Then I discovered that the possibility to install some important proprietary packets from backports was discontinued. Easy ubuntu 2.3 was the right choice (very good project). I was sorry to note tha same hanging up on w32codecs that was already reported on the forum.
Any suggestion?

I went into the 'eu' script in the EasyUbuntu folder and changed the www1.mplayer... to www4.mplayer...

It downloaded the codecs, but it still doesn't work. RealPlayer doens't install either.

The Mplayer website is down, so Easy Ubuntu don't work.
Another bug is present and it's impossible to install "firefox plugins".

I apologize, the next release (2.4) will fix that and have new features:
- Use the PLF repository: http://placelibre.ath.cx/keyes/index.php/2005/10/14/56-plf-ubuntu-meeting-summary
- Localized sources.list (like fr.archive.ubuntu.com ..., thanks jkbys)
- Activating UDMA if possible (chipset detection)
- New translations (Japanese, Italian and Portuguese)
- Use totem-xine because it seems to work better than totem-gstreamer

Ask a silly question, I installed the ATI drivers and forgot to make a note of the uninstall command if I was getting xorg errors and Ubuntu wouldn't show up. Oh okay, I love it. But just a couple of things. I installed the msn thingy, and it absolutely refused to work at all. Froze up totally.

Xine plays dvds but they are real choppy. They played really well before using another method to download win32 codecs, I wonder if you are using the same repositories...

Now for the big one. I cannot turn my computer off unless I physically press the power button. There are no options when I go to log off other than "do you want to save the current settings". There is no choice between logging off, restarting, turning off, etc. If I can edit a conf file, that's fine with me, no prob, but I wonder if EU was the cause of this because it happened right after I used it.

Oh, and as long as you are so incredible at automating things, I just know you won't stop at just this. I'm eagerly awaiting your next project, which logically would be an installer that automates many more things easier than using synaptic (which is incredibly easy in the first place). Would you make, or is there already, an option to uninstall whatever is done in EU? Would one just uncheck stuff to undo what one has done in EU?

Thanks for taking the time to make this really cool program/package/thing/whatever you call it in Ubuntuese. :)

I just wanted to say thanks for this wonderful tool. It saves alot of time for me. I'm an IT Manager starting to deploy some Ubuntu-based machines to a few employees and one major complaint has been the lack of MP3 support.

does EasyUbuntu now install the Quicktime codec ? Last week, it didnt. I still have to use PCLinuxOS (which is very good in Multimedia) to watch the Apple movie trailer site.

Try right clicking on your desktop, make a launcher, and in command, put

and try it that way.

Sorry I was away while some times.

First for the PLF: The main PLF repositories are down for 2 or 3 days.
Please use a Mirror replacing in conf/sources.list or lang/your_lang/sources.list if available:

If you speak French you can follow the problem on Philippe Mironov's blog: http://blog.freecontrib.org/ he's Ubuntu PLF sysadmin.

We apologize.

Andre: Yes send me the translation (ex: using the file lang/fr/EasyUbuntu.po): dunglas AT gmail DOT com

if have a look in /etc/apt/ folder you should see a file called sources.list, which is the updated version you are now using. And the is probably another called something like sources.list.original or sources.list.backup. Just check the dates one of the should be the original.

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo gedit /etc/apt/{backup filename goes here}

then you can copy and paste between them.

Then save the sources.list version

Does it work in AMD64 version?

That would depend on whether packages have been built for the "64" repositories. I'd say probably not. I don't know how difference there is between the repositories.

I have just downloaded the last version of Easyubuntu written in python. But i cant get it working. I m not sure the way I launch the script easyubuntu.py is good. I used
sudo python easyubuntu.py
The main window of Easyubuntu was then launched although a few warnings : (easyubuntu.py:9612): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(easyubuntu.py:9612): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers
I precise I'am running under a fresh installation of breezy upgraded with standard updates.

Here is a solution (not tested on powerpc)

in the detect.py file replace the two occurences of :
deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ breezy free non-free
by :
deb ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/plf/ubuntu/plf/ breezy free non-free

Finaly remove if it exists the detetct.pyc file. (sudo rm detect.pyc)
________

You can otherwise download a version of Easyubuntu i have modified here (http://www.filesupload.com/showlink.php?files=EasyUbuntu-Non_official-alternative_repository.tar.gz&dir=&user=coincoin).
Please consider it is only a temporary and non official version of Easyubuntu.

all I'm seeing here is that automatix was based upon this, so is there any real difference between this and automatix other than appearance?

my question is whever automatix is based on it or it is based on automatix. I haven't heard of this before, and used automatix. If one is based on other shouldn't there be credits....
edit: it seems that easy ubuntu was first and automatix second...

This question has probably been answered, but some quick searching about hasn't put my mind at ease.

Why aren't Easy Ubuntu and / or Automatix just independant package repositories? From my understanding these pieces of software (I haven't used them yet) are designed to automate the installation of downloadable software.

Now I understand why they aren't part of the *official* or hosted repositories... IP concerns and all that, but what, fundamentally, can these do that apt + .debs can't? What specifically is preventing this extra content from being maintained as .debs on independant servers?

Hey Kar-tar - Independent reposititories is EXACTLY what EasyUbuntu and Automatix are based around. With the exception of a few wgets, most of the software that's installed with these scripts are pulled from "alternate" repositories. All the script(s) actually do is edit the source.list and apt-get the desired packages.

Their aim is to make life easier for newbie's so they don't have to go around editing sources.list and sudo'ing and stuff like that.

Hope that explains things ...

What sort of problems with WM[AV] were you having? 'faulty' isnt very usefull for debuging a problem :)

Is Easy Ubuntu Open Source so that I could look around in the source code? That would be very nice. Private message me if you can help.

Of course, it's open source.

It's written in Python, so the "executable" is the code.

You can also get the code from svn, details on http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html

The Kubuntu link seems to be having issues. (from the first post)

I didn't see any updated links in the rest of the pages, but if I missed it, please correct me. I'm just trying to easily install pieces since Automatix doesn't support Dapper yet.

Which Kubuntu Link? The current EasyUbuntu Beta works on Kubuntu. (http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html)

I have tested the easy ubuntu this past weekend. Seems to work well, but had a couple of things to add:

Numlock didnt seem to work, even after reboot.

Need to add Adobe to the mix, as it is in Automatix.

Would be nice to have the Firefox 1.5 update on it too.

I did down load and use automatix for my Badger install. I find automatix to be very simple to use, but has a ton of features too, that I wont use, but nice to have the option.

All and all, great tool, just seems to need a bit more tweaking.

I haven't yet tried EasyUbuntu, but I really like the direction it's going!

"This release supports Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, Breezy/Dapper, x86/powerpc/amd64!"

Wow, that's just awesome!

WoW!! How easy is that!? Nice one, and Kudos to the team that put this together. Really makes getting Xubuntu "up & running" with a few more Bells & Whistles, a LOT easier! I heartily recommend this.....

Many many thanks for saving me soooo much time & hassle! :)

I tried to install the nVidia driver on Kubuntu Dapper Drake, but it didn't work.

It seems that nvidia-glx conflicts with nvidia-settings.

Any ideas?

I used Easy Ubuntu on my Dell Laptop running 5.10 and it worked perfectly. I now have a dual boot iBook running Dapper and tried Easy Ubuntu and nothing got installed. Does it work on the PPC version of Dapper?

I did the terminal commands posted, the script seem to run without error but nothing is working. I had downloaded the latest version Beta 3? I am running Dapper on my iBook (PPC) anyone had success with getting Easy Ubuntu to work on a PPC?
I tried to add the RealPlayer app but got an error message it was the wrong architecture. I thought EU was suppose to run on PPC?

Is this on Breezy/Dapper? There are no binaries for realplayer, we are waiting for someone to package it for us.

Is the version given at the start of this thread out-of-date? The link is:

Please use Easy Ubuntu 2.4 beta3
Get Easy Ubuntu 2.3.1 (works bad)

You are led to a page dated
jeudi 27 Octobre 2005 (the rest is in English however)
and in the blog replies below there are several months worth of spam - the usual porn links etc.

Would you trust a product from a site like that???????

This one seems to actually work. I installed everything (except Nvidia which I had compiled manually) so I'll do a little experimentation and see what happens. :-k

A suggestion.

Remove this sticky and replace it with a sticky with the correct information in the first post. It would make much easier for us newbies.

BTW. Thanks to all that have made easy ubuntu:)

I second this. If the first post in this thread can't be edited, this stickied thread should be replaced with one that is up to date. This one get people started off all wrong.

Mph. I followed all the instructions but when it comes to "sudo python easyubuntu.in"
it asks for my password, and then tells me

"python: can't open file 'easyubuntu.in': [Errno 2] No such file or directory"

I'm completely new to Linux in any form, and even the experienced person that was helping me was having trouble making my NVIDIA card work (Can't stand this small a resolution much longer...)... so I was really hoping this could help :S

- I haven't actually read all the posts yet. There's 20 pages, but if I find something I'll edit this.

@Zeterai

try typing ""sudo python easyubuntu.py"

it works when i do that but i can't dl all the packages and i get some security error after that...lemme know how yours turns out

Hmm.. works well enough so far. Several things are refusing to install but near as I can tell, it's all stuff for Breezy. Since I use Dapper, I don't see a problem.

Universal refused to install as a repository as well, but I've put that in manually. Yes, I may be new, but that doesn't mean I haven't learned to screw around with things I shouldn't. >.>

Did you enter your root password properly, Kouya? That might give a security error, but I'm not entirely sure. It goes through Sudo though, and that means you've gotta use your password SOMEWHERES..

Kouya
June 20th, 2006, 11:07 AM
cool!

glad it works for u. Yup I did enter my root password properly...

anyway i just did a clean install of dapper again..will give easy ubuntu another shot.

oh with easy ubuntu, are u able to watch dvds and vcds?

Zeterai
June 20th, 2006, 11:15 AM
Doesn't actually work for me. It's in but it just doesn't do anything.

Tried installing just one; the NVIDIA drivers that I WANT...I'm used to 1280x1024, y'see and this resolution hurts.

This is what it gives me.. "http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper/universe/source/Sources.gz: Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)"

Kouya
June 20th, 2006, 11:40 AM
hmm wat resolution are you using now?

even before installing easy ubuntu i was on 1280x1024.

i can't watch dvds or vcds either..I've just install easy ubuntu again. will let u know if i figure out anythg.
