View Full Version : Debian & Ubuntu dual-booting - is that redundant ?

Or, to put it another way, I am wondering how close the package / repository relationship is between the two distros. I used to multiboot a bunch of Linuxes. Now I really want no more than three with Ubuntu Ultimate Edition being one of them. So, coming full circle, is having Debian as one of the other distros kind of redundant due to any factor or commonality between ubuntu and Debian ?
What other distros impress you guys?

it really depends on your needs. Debian stable is a lot more stable than ubuntu, so if you require stability it's worth having. Debian sid is always on the bleeding edge if that is what you require. I personally think a well-configured debian system is more worth having than a buntu, but if your ubuntu satisfies your needs and you have no particular requirements for stability or the bleeding edge (or just a general love for the debian way of doing things), I doubt there will be much point having debian as a distro. Probably more fun to try out something else.

I think Debian loads much faster than Ubuntu. The trade off is that everything just simply works on Ubuntu while you have to do some dirty works with Debian in order to make things work. But then it might be because I'm still inexperienced with Debian.

In my experience, Debian is faster than Ubuntu, but as jingo says, there is a little more elbow grease involved. Concerning the repositories, Debian's is larger and it is usually easier to find .deb packages for Debian than Ubuntu.
I would recommend giving it a shot and if you think it's redundant, install a different distro over it's partition.

i personally think debian is more server geared while ubuntu is much more desktop based. i distro hop as well but desktop use always pushes me back to ubuntu. i've dabbled with debian but more so to see how hard it was to get it to work like ubuntu. i was just playing around learning. more than anything, i just use debian as a server being it's OG design.

The vast majority of the packages are pretty much the same (Ubuntu Universe is most of the Debian repository, without any changes), but you would not want to mix Debian and Ubuntu repositories. Important stuff like libc6 has been altered by Ubuntu from the Debian version, making them incompatible.
