Feel free to add your concepts to this thread. ;)

The contrast is to great to me. Besides, i think that the art team went away from the black/orange scheme. If you wait a day or two, the specs for themes will be posted.

Ashame Black & Orange had a lot of potential to go somewhere.

That looks really nice man, is there an actual theme like that already? I wana use it.

The theme doesn't actually exist since its a mockup.

But it could be done by using the Glossy gtk and FreeTime metacity theme off gnome-look. Just adjust the colors to match and replace FreeTime's buttons with the Human buttons.

This looks way better than the others. Improve it a bit more. Good work.

I almost fell on the floor laughing when I saw the award!

The award sums up the current default brown look really well!

That is the funniest thing I have seen in a log time! Good one!

A live working screenshot.

The gtk is a bit dark as I have not added highlights

Heres a light version that is closer to the default Human theme yet based on Mag's dark themes.

I like the light version better than the dark, but the buttons on both still scream at me saying "Look at me! Look at me!" Maybe tone them down a bit?

I like your mock ups, to bad we probably won't get anything that looks this nice out the box. I love Ubuntu, but if I wasn't able to change the themes I'd never use it. The defaults are soooo ugly.

By the way, for your latest mockup, it doesn't use Ubuntu's color (brown), which is what Ubuntu wants its default theme to use.

Yeah but they only use brown in their wallpaper and gdm background screens. The rest is orange and tan to gray accents. The last mockup does no different aside from using a photographic wallpaper.

Ok I'm gonna reply again but I may go off topic some on the subject

I feel brown is a mixed bag. But I also understand its the color or shade that defines Ubuntu.

Now If they are going to use brown again and sell the idea to the public they need some way of getting it to work. Not just simulating the meaning of Ubuntu through chocolate swirls (btw choclate swirl actually looks good through a black smoked glass panel) and tan gtk.

However I do feel Black & Orange or White & Orange work the best to appeal to the Blue windows users and the White apple users without much adjustment.

I guess what I'm getting at is that a new way need to be looked at to get brown to work. I'm starting to consider taking time out of my illustration schedule to come up with something.

Maybe we can warp this thread into a concept art thread???

For example take pictures of brown objects, paintings, nature scenes, urban blade runner city grime, sunsets, etc and combine the ideas. I may refer back to my college work where I use make Sepia tone under illustrations and use it as a crutch.

Also! Anyone know ubuntu's opinion on Textures in their themes? I know they tend not to use pixmaps but if they are cool with it I think very subtle accented textures can help.

I like the way the Ubuntu logo is in 3D, but the theme is a tad too much like Vista (The dark variation, anyway), something to avoid if you want your Ubuntu desktop recognized as Ubuntu. Otherwise the colour scheme is consistent with itself which is great.

Few Concepts of gloss black to wood grain tool bar. One version is opaque, second is semi translucent, and third is noticeably transparent.

Ignore the wallpapers and gtk as this is strictly panel concept only.

PNG format only heavy detailed SVG coming soon.

The orange minimize/maximize/close I feel are too much contrast. The grey ones are nice though.

Also...Netscape???

I find Netscape is more stable then Firefox (especially version 9). Also, you may want to use a different shade of brown and black (I find anything else looks ugly :().

The last screens were only to feature the wood grain task bar. Excuse the orange icons, gray gtk, and browser as they were carried over from the previous mockups.

Near finished version of wood grain toolbar + matching metacity. Currently they are only pixmaps but I will post svg and downloadable versions very soon. I gotta get some sleep and happy holidays! ;)

Since there has been progress on the ubuntu wiki for themes leaning toward Union and Gelatin I've decided to hang up my work on the slick wood grain concept.

But in honor of open source I've also decided to post the content for download. ;)

Oh one more thing! I used FreeTime metacity as my base and the original rights belong to JoanAnton. The project is listed as GPL on gnome-look but I'd contact Joan if you create anything official from these. If anything on the project is created by me such as the buttons and wood grain textures you are free to use them however. Enjoy!

This is the final screen shot of the panels and metacity. There is no fully functional matching GTK other than the color changed Glossy gtk. You can custom swatch to my screen shot if you want it to match.

Also I've included the SVG and PNG corner icon
