I am trying to install Ubuntu on an Ultra 5 400mhz with 365mb memory
If i install the 7.10 server edition it install perfectly fine.
When i install the alternative editions so i can have the desktop it keeps failing at the install and software section.
Problem is it doesn't give me and reason for the failure.
Anyone else got any information on how they got ubuntu installed?

Hi, how do you get 365mb memory?..I had software fail at the software section, bad disk's have you tested the disk's. when first installing, at language choice press tab, this will give you the main menue look for the test disk option.

384mb of Memory to be exact.
I have run alternative CD a few times with different combinations to try and see if i can bypass what was causing the problem.
The problem seems to occur when installing the desktop.
Is there a manual way i can install the desktop.
i.e. Install Server CD frst as i know i can get this working. Then do manual install of Desktop myself.
If so can someone give me some information about how to do a manual Install and where where to get the files to do this.

Hi, if you have set up server with network, try ( as sudo ) apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, or try deselect

Hi Folks.
I had no luck doing the server/desktop install on either Ultra 30 or Ultra 5.. I thought I had it right on one Ultra 30, but the desktop would not boot after installation. I went back to the Debian and did the net install, and viola! it works. I have been using it, and had to do some re-installs on a couple of machines (U30) because of stuff I had messed up, and didn't know how else to fix it. It does work, though, which is more than I could say for the Ubuntu. I am too much of a rookie to know why one works, and the other doesn't.

Hi all,
I also have an Ultra 5 workstation, 1GB of low profile ram (just fits under the floppy drive) and an 80GB HDD. Currently running Solaris 10. Want to install Ubu 7.10 and run BOINC client to do some distributed computing. Anyone doing same with problems? :)
