:)Yup, Iīm smiling. I am posting this from an Ultra 30 with Ubuntu 7.10. Not being the swiftest in the world with things in the computer world, I would just about be turning cartwheels, if I could do cartwheels. After I installed the OS, I came up against the fact that there was not a desktop installed automatically. this fine web site gave me the information to get me going in the right direction to get the desktop installed. Then the browser wouldnīt work. Tried several different things, none worked. Neither Mozilla, nor Konquorer seemed to work. Probably operator error, somehow. Enter Epiphany. Went throught the loading proccess viola! Works like a charm. I have been browsing and sending some e-mails for the last half hour. So far, no crashes, no smoke. When you arenīt very good at such things, even small victories like this are a cause for celebration.

Well, It worked yesterday. I had to use the rescue disk to boot today. I was uncertain that everything was kosher yesterday, in spite of the system seemingly working. Will try the install and GUI install again today. I have downloaded the system several times, with varying degrees of success. We'll see what today holds.
It is now later. I have done a new install of both the OS and Gnome desktop, which takes a while. I was using it and decided to grit my teeth and see if it would reboot. As of now, it will not. I think I will turn it off and try a cold boot. I like using this rather than Solaris, but the inability to boot normally could wear thin, fast.

As the message board says, it was four weeks ago that I last posted here. Not being a Geek, although, I am wearing a Geek Squad t-shirt now, I can plead ignorance in my computer dealings. I have not had any luck with the Ubuntu installation. What little time I have spent on it, I have come to the conclusion that the problem is with the GUI installer. When I do the install, and then reboot, I can't get to x without using the rescue disk, and logging in as root. A friend suggested I look at Debian, and see what it had to offer. I figured 'why not'. I found that the Debian web site features, among other things, a net-install. I downloaded the boot disk, and gave it a whirl. IT WORKS. I have had a few bugs with the internet connection, but hours of hassle and a phone call to the ISP found the problem to be with my DSL modem. I thought the Ubuntu desktop was pretty cool (and still do) but I just couldn't get it to work. I'm sure the problem is operator error, but somehow I seem to have averted it with the Debian net-install. I have installed it on a few Ultra 5's as well as the Ultra 30's. I gave a few of the 5's to friends, and one to one daughter. As far as I know, they are enjoying playing with them. Time will tell.
