GDM customizations

Is there any way in GDM to make the password and login name two separate boxes? It's annoying when I accidentally type my username wrong and then hit enter (muscle memory) knowing full and well that my password won't work now. Then I have to wait for it to probe for this password for a non-existant user and that annoys me.

So is there any way I can just separate the field into a user name box and a password entry box instead? And I'm not talking a user selection box, I need a box that will allow username text input.
