So I was able to change the font color for the gnome panel (http://brentroos.com/2006/07/07/change-gnome-panel-text-color/), but there was a side effect.

When I click on Applications, Places or System, a white dotted box will encase all three menus.

Heres a screenshot to show what im talking about.

How can I get rid of it?

AFAIK this is actually a well known bug in gnome panel. (Well known to me, anyways, but I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere else :P )

When you click on the menu, the last thing that you clicked on the panel (except for the menu) gets a dotted border around it. Why, I have no idea.

I usually see it around the firefox icon or the notification area. However, I've never seen it around the menu itself, so this might be a sperate problem alltogether.

I had the same problem. A quick fix is just to remove the menu from panel and add it again. Worked for me anyways
