On the top task bar, the words: "Applications" and "System" and, another one i can't remember (im a complete beginner) should appear. And up till today they have, but mine have gone missing. The only thing I can see on the task bar are the shortcut images (Firefox, evolution mail, etc.) on the left and the usual time & date/power options etc. on the right. I have tryed "add to panel", but can only add individual applications, not the submenu "Applications" or "System". How can I restore these. I will attatch a screen shot if this is a bit unclear.

P.S sorry if the message is a bit long winded for a basic problem :)

Why can't you add them? Do you get any error messages?

You can also try to do:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop --reinstall

In the "Add to panel" menu, i cannot find the option to add a menu of "Applications" or "System", only the option to add a submenu of "games", "Office" etc.

Also, I entered the command, and the last reply has been:

Unpacking replacement ubuntu-desktop ...
Setting up ubuntu-desktop (1.79) ...
(Username) :~$

And the taskbar still looks the same, has if finished restoring?
