I m wondering if there is any opensource software in this area.
I am looking for an alternative solution to, say, JMP and Mintab which I can plan my experiment and eventually analyse the data.
Thanks very much.

Wow, this is a really old thread. But in case anyone else is interested...
I was just googling on this myself, and it looks likely that the CRAN package AlgDesign could be helpful. I haven't tried it myself yet. Since it is in R you would need some familiarity with that to proceed.

Thank you for pointing out this package. A few years ago I wanted to get up to speed on design of experiments but I found it pretty frustrating for this reason. A lot of the resources I found, including a couple of well regarded textbooks I purchased, all started with high-level descriptions of what was going on, then they basically say "now we put these numbers into Minitab and this is the result," or "Minitab says we need to do X runs with these factors."
I assume that Minitab must be one of those things like Matlab, IDL, etc. that has essentially a free student version. I also was surprised I couldn't find a free knockoff (gminitab?). Unfortunately my work focus went into other directions and I never got back to trying to figure it all out.

The 'Student' version of MiniTab is ~$99 for a six-month academic license. The full version is about $1400 for a single-user license.
Too rich for my blood.

Replying to an old thread after Google searching for "Design of Experiments software for Ubuntu".
I couldn't find anything for Ubuntu, but I have used "Design Expert" by Stat-Ease for Windows. Their website includes tutorials in PDF and I believe they still offer a limited-use 30 day trial version of "Design Expert". Having used Minitab and DE, I believe DE is better suited for both analytical and experimental DOEs. The tutorials are very useful. Highly recommend this software to employers implementing a DOE study.
Cheers,
Steven
