...except perhaps when bought with new systems?
Maybe this (http://www.flixxy.com/microsoft-vista-operating-system.htm) throws some light on the subject, apart from the phenomenal success of OS's like Ubuntu Linux

I think Vista copy protection should be so hardened that it's impossible to have pirated copies around. As long as VISTA can "easily" be pirated, it is considered as "free" (in terms of gratis) for any (half-)geek who builds his system together himself and doesn't buy a standard computer.

I'm very sorry to be the one to have to break it to you but I read this in the morning.

Basically it says that the WGA will not be obligatory since legal users sometimes have trouble too, the story has not been offically confirmed. On the other hand MS want te be harder on hacks that allow paople to use vista illegally.
Just found a similar article in English
It won't open here (at work) but it is on the frontpage.

That was my thought exactly why they would do this, to make sure that they keep their marketshare even though they know they screwed up with vista

The 'easy-to-pirate' patch MS is now installing will be a laugh. No one wants to buy Vista at present and soon they will find that no one will *want* to pirate it!"

as there will not be any DX10 for XP the gamers will sooner or later adopt to VISTA.

When you can get a home computer with 16 cores and 16GB of ram?
Actually the fallacy of linux gaming should win. Since no one has vista, the studios won't make games for DX10... most likely the main DX10 games will be MS funded or encouraged. Maybe more studio's will opt for OpenGL... that is probably a good thing for everyone.

Well, that just not true.

There are tens of thousands copies (not torrents, copies) available for vista.

or game devs will stay with DX9, since moving to DX10 = smaller market
