Welcome to Linux :)

It doesn't matter if your card supports DX9 or DX10. Just concentrate on how fast it is :)

I myself have a 8800gtx, but that's because I play games on windows too (dual boot).

If you are going to have eye candy, I suggest an nvidia card (just my 2 cents).

Head on over to www.winehq.com and they should have a database on the games that work well with wine + ubuntu :)

Here is a very recent tread discussing what hardware should be in a Linux friendly gaming PC: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=629924

Steam and most of the games on Steam are relatively well supported in Wine. With the right computer and configuration you'll be playing everything in the Orange box in Linux with ok performance.
