Due to popular demand, we will now have a monthly desktop thread. Please don't put pics here or attach them to your post. Instead, post them in the Gallery- here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/browseimages.php?c=7

And link to the thumbnail.

Let the party begin!

No nudity, racial slurs, super graphic violence, drug use, or something offensive please.

Kind of a newbie here, but it looks as if you have a bar up top, then one underneath with all the icons on it. Then you have a bar at the bottom of the page. How did you get that? Did you get all that at gnome-look.org? Also what do you mean by controls and window border?

Kind of a newbie here, but it looks as if you have a bar up top, then one underneath with all the icons on it. Then you have a bar at the bottom of the page. How did you get that?

This is done using two different things. For the extra "menu bar" and icons I am using Gnome Applets. You right click on an existing menu bar (called a panel) and you can make a new panel or add applets, which are small programs which do specific things like monitor the weather, your processor activity and lots of other cool stuff. Play with it a bit and you will have some fun.

The floating bar near, but not at the very top is a desklet from gDesklets called "starterbar." I got it along with the latest version of gDesklets from their web site at http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ Look around there, lots of eye candy and resource-using unnecessary fun available. The icons are links I made to various programs I use often.

Oh! I also made a transparent png that I use for the background on the panels and for the starter bar. I'll attach it at the end of this post for anyone that wants to use it. Nothing special, it will just save you the time of firing up gimp for yourself.

Did you get all that at gnome-look.org? Also what do you mean by controls and window border?

Go to System->Preferences->Theme and click theme details. There are three tabs there allowing you to mix and match parts of themes. I used the controls and border from one theme and chose icons from another. I will often change and use the window borders from one theme and the controls from another. Play with it and you will see what it does.

Doesn't the font color on the icons give you a headache? White text with a black outline against a white wallpaper would drive me nuts.

Yeah, I agree StormyEyes. I have been fighting this problem. I have yet to find a way to change the desktop font color. I tried editing .gtkrc.mine but haven't had any success :? Anyway, I have had to just go back to a dark background (probably easier on the eyes anyway). I do miss some of the configureability of KDE (former Gentoo and SuSe user ;-) ).

Hmm... I get around the problem by not having desktop icons. I never liked 'em, anyway. Just give me a nice menu.

I'm a big Eye Candier. Gnome 2.12 with modified Gnome-panel, gdesklets, xcompmgr turned on, Metabox theme, and the best wallpaper ever- "The Test of Time." Gdesklets include: the Dock-like thing, calender, floating task bar (great for dual head), fancy weather thing, fancy clock, CPU monitor (my favorite), and a Rhythmbox desklet that I mostly added to show off the transparant Firefox window.

Please ignore the IE icon...thats the most ugly part!!! :)

Here's mine, nothing too fancy.
I like dark backgrounds. This one is RA, from vladstudio (http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaper/?299), FTB desklets for cpu and network, personal one for my webcam. There's a few folders which shouldn't be there, but that's work in progress and I like them where I can get to them easily.

This is one of many reasons why I like Linux. You can trick out your desktops, do whatever you want, in Windows you're stuck with the same start menu (you can do some mods here and there, but it's largely the same) just like every other dork out there. I like being different and Ubuntu allows me to do that.

I honestly don't remember but I found a simliar one here (http://www.skinz.org/skins.phtml?category=138&offset=5&sort_order=desc&sort_by=timestamp_updated&skins_pp=5)

you might want to try the winamp 2.x link here (http://www.skinz.org/skins.phtml?category=21) , have a look around it's loaded with skins. BTW you may also want to keep any archives you download as they are updated; as to how frequently, i am not sure. That being said it may be difficult to relocate them as in this case.

I have a question. Some of you guys are modifying your desktops, I was wondering, would you suggest an online tutorial to someone like me who's pretty much a n00b to this whole process?

Depends on what you're into. Just type "<something> wallpaper" into google and look at the results that you get. For example, anime wallpaper will yield you this (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=anime+wallpaper&btnG=Google+Search).

I don't have a link to online tutorials, though there might be some stuff at http://www.gnome-look.org/ and that would be a good place to find some wallpapers and themes.

Wallpapers are easy to change. right click on the desktop and choose change desktop background. If the wallpaper you want hasn't been added to the list yet, click add wallpaper and browse to it and voila.

Themes can be downloaded from the site listed above. To add them, System->Preferences->Theme and drag the tar.gz file into the theme dialog box. You will be asked if you want to add the theme, select install and it will be available. Note that some themes are complete, and some only include the window frames or icons, etc. so you may find the theme in the main dialog or you may have to click "edit" and look in the various tabs to find the theme bits that exist. I suggest playing around with it and having fun...it really is the best way to get comfortable and learn how it all works.

Icons may be added in the same way and place as themes, but sometimes the icon package may not install well. In that case, just decompress the tar.gz file into /usr/share/icons and you can choose the individual icons using smeg or via a right click on the icon and selecting properties when it is on the desktop/in a folder.

Um...being entirely self-taught on this through trial and error, that's about the extent of my knowledge, but it should be enough to really get you going. Have fun!!

Is that an anime wallpaper? If so, from which anime?
