EDITED: Two different December Screenshot threads merged (with my same pictures in each of them), so I thought I would change this post to show my clearlooks gtk theme, and how it looks in the new Firefox 3 pre beta 2 Minefield. Also shown is the Gmail 2 with a skin I modified to look like my theme:

Nice, crimesaucer! Are you running Emerald in XFCE?

Thanks.

Yes, I use Compiz Fusion and Emerald in xfce4 on Archlinux. It's usually very fast.

My gtk is a clearlooks theme that I made, the icons are also homemade from the UbuntuStudio icons.

My wallpaper was from deviantART, and I made the gdm using it.

Pissing around with making my desktop kinda OSX-y. I have yet to find any dark themes that blend together well (I find an emerald theme I love, a GTK theme I love, but they look like balls together), and considering I'm on battery power with dimmed display I went lighter.

Basically all the first responses you get for "OSX" on gnome-look.org, plus AWN with the chrome-type theme, plus a background I found on DeviantART.

Need to throw a few desklets on there, though, I'm thinking about the Cairo Clock, mainly. Of course, if I do that, I need a new wallpaper. That would just look ridiculous.

I really like this theme a lot. This is the best dark theme I've used by far. Not a big deal, but I like how the minimize/maximize buttons on the windows are hidden until you hover over them :-)

I think that is a KDE4 theme, which his panel shows gives away.

I put two panels on top of each other, bottom panel is 40 pixels high and i have multiline taskbar,and top panel is just a 15 pixels high.
Both panels are set to transparent and background images are loaded, to get that look like on screenshot.If you need more sand me your e-mail and i can send you a backgrounds so you can set your panels to look the same.I don`t know is this relevant but i am using Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).

Still playing with openbox, getting used to setting themes etc through a miriad of gnome tools. Not happy with font size, but playing around with the gnome dpi screws around with conky, and my obmenu.

Ditched firefox (because of random text box crashes) for opera and kazehakase - not sure i'll stick with it...

I'm using Gutsy as well, though I usually prefer Xfce. I believe GNOME could really use a right-click application menu on the Desktop... It's a shame Xfce is a pain to put a picture as a panel background, BUT I still love your idea... A private message is on the way...

It's a pretty awesome DE and everything works great. The applications are pretty crashy right now (Konqueror, Kopete, Kmail specifically), but I use Firefox and Gmail for email so that's not an issue for me.

Dolphin is a great filemanager, It's got some pretty cool fade/hover effects and the split folder view is pretty cool. Kwin has expose like effects built in too which is cool.

Have you tried building via kdesvn-build? If you're moderately experienced in messing with the command line it's a great way to preview KDE4.

There's an ubuntu thread on it right now.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=609075&highlight=kde4

Basically follow the Kubuntu section here (use apt-get instead of aptitude if on Ubuntu):
http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/KDE4#Kubuntu_and_Debian

Once you get the dependencies installed follow the kdesvn-build guide from the bookmarked place on.
http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/kdesvn-build#Download_and_install_kdesvn-build

After you get everything up and running updating to the latest version of kde4 is as easy as typing ./kdesvn-build :P. Of course compiling takes a little while, so don't expect to have kde4 up and running in an hour. Any build related questions I'd suggest replying in that thread (or send me a PM), no need to fill up the screenshot thread with installation chat :P.

now that you've posted that, I'm going to try to make my desktop look just like vista

Part of the strength/appeal of open source operating systems comes from the ability to customize them (see this thread). As someone who has experience encouraging people to switch, this appeal often creates a powerful impression on those who are using M$ or Apple operating systems. "I can do what you can do better" (maybe a little extreme), but probably not in the case of Vista.

Converted to Fluxbox this weekend. This is definitely a work in progress, as I'm still learning some of the finer points of Fluxbox and Conky (yes, those fonts need fixin') -- but I wanted to share my excitement.

This computer has never had performance problem under Gnome or KDE, but Fluxbox definitely keeps the fans quieter. Stylish + crazy performance = I'm sold.

Edit: I cut-and-pasted the wrong wallpaper in that screenshot: Should be ""After Midnight" by ^manicho at Deviantart."

It's easy, you just have to know where to look:

fbsetbg -f /path/to/image
That's temporary, but you can add it to the startup file to make it automatic.

To use an image as the background for the xfce4-panel, you will have to use a separate gtkrc-2.0

1st: Make an image, and save it as panel.png

(I make my images 1 pixel wide so there is a consistent even flow)

2nd: Make a .gtkrc-2.0 and save it into ~/

here is my gtkrc-2.0 :

style "panel"
{
bg[NORMAL] = "#000000"
bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "panel.png"
fg[NORMAL] = "#FFFFFF"
}

widget_class "*Panel*" style "panel"
widget "*Panel*" style "panel"
class "*Panel*" style "panel"

3rd: Then in "alt+f2" run:

killall xfce4-panel

next type "alt+f2" again and run:

xfce4-panel &

to restart your xfce4-panel using your new gtkrc-2.0 (or just skip all of that and just restart your computer after doing step 1 and 2).

No. whatever image you use, it will be a 0% transparency. But you can make your panel 10% or 20% transparent. My image is a black glossy panel and I have it at 36% transparent, and my icons still look pretty good. You can see the wallpaper behind it, and the buttons are still readable.

Few questions guys:

- For those using thunar, is it possible to have it remember to view certain folders as icons and the rest as a list? I want my pictures folders viewed as icons, and everything else as a list. However If I change the view to icons for one folder it shows everything as icons :(

- In Fluxbox, how can I tell it to open new windows in the center or at a position? It keeps opening everything in the top left corner :-/

TIA!

I'm trying out Xfce for a nice change from my adventures in K-land. So far, I'm missing Katapult and Konqueror, as well as the konfig...sorry, configurability. But I do like GTK themes and the modularity (although KDEmod does offer the latter).

I'm after a GTK (no Gnome deps, please) image viewer, similar to Gwenview. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

Anyway, theme.

GTK is Creamy Modern (Black panel)
Wallpaper is called "leaf", but I don't remember where it's from. Will upload on request. I know it's an autumn one, but it's not cold enough here for a winter theme yet!
Window decoration is Azurite, on Emerald.
Font is Lucida Grande
Apps shown are wicd (for network stuff), PcManFM and pidgin hiding in the tray. Oh, and Firefox 3.0b2 pre-release, nicely integrating with the desktop.

That would just look ridiculous.

nice job... is this custom, or some shell that can be installed?

(and I don't think that you are crazier than me ;))

Had to share my first foray into the wonderful world of widescreen desktops. Picked up a 24 incher last night, and I am pissed I didn't go widescreen sooner.

This is my first submission into December desktops, but rest assured, I'll be tweaking it all month!!

I like it, but it doesn't scream Christmas at me for some reason, despite the fact there is a Christmas tree and fireplace.

I really like the colors, they even match your avatar. :)

In KDE, go to Control Center >> Desktop >> Behavior. Modify one of your mouse buttons to open a "Custom Menu," and it will prompt you to create said menu.

Thank you p_quarles :) The original is much brighter so it was not suitable for desktop usage; I did use it as a backdrop for a project in a Photoshop class I took last year. I cut out some of the leaves and used some of the spaces to make it look like other pictures of our honeymoon were underneath the ice :-)

She's very talented; much moreso with a camera than I am.
