In Windows XP you can move your taskbar to the side of the desktop, making it vertical.

When you do this, the tabs are horizontal (unlike in Ubuntu), so you can see what programs and documents you have open.

This was extremely helpful to me, because I often work with a very large number of documents and programs running, and I need to be able to read each tab to quickly move between things.

Is there any way to achieve this in Ubuntu? It probably would take some sort of a hack. If I knew of one, or even where to get started in learning to make a hack to do this (if absolutely necessary), I would definitely want to look into it.

This mostly solves my problem! Thanks so much, rundee_f!

I mistakenly believed the vertical dock was actually reorienting the windows...

Now, if I could just get the windows to stay the same size. Normally they expand to fill up the entire window space in the dock. Is there a way to make them stay at a fixed size?
