Inspired by nico's thread, this is your favorite creations with the gimp! Post what you created, learn from others!

Here are a couple of mine. :) First is a logo I made for Oz Linux. Second is a vista-like start orb for a color variant of Ubuntu's logo (though it DOES look like Linux Mint's logo ;)). Third is a couple of pictures that were traced in inkscape and then filled with the new paint bucket tool (you have to get the development version for this, but it is plenty stable for home use).

Another one, one I made the same time I did the green one, but for Ubuntu. I updated it today with a light. I can't believe I even did it, it is so good!

Yep, my av is there too. It was one of my favs, so I used it as my av.

I would recommend upgrading to the latest Inkscape from CVS if you plan on using it, but be warned it took all day for me to compile/make/make install it.

I really like your ubuntu logo here its quite nice, i have a sugestion tho, if you make your light a bit more suddle, more transparent with no real visable white spot it would look good, allso maybe if you added a little bit of a texture to it to make it pop more, :D only thing i could think of to help it out but its very nice i like it

what is inkscape btw i dont know what it is but i would love to learn it

BTW i just installed it as im typeing now :D

Inkscape is a graphics program like GIMP, but aimed more at Scalable Vector Graphics (SVGs). It is similar to the commercial product Adobe Illustrator.

I will try to see if I can tone the light down a bit. :)

Ohh, that's really nice! You just grabbed an image of the firefox logo and deleted the globe and enlarged it?

you can download the svg image, and open it on inkscape, try to ungroup it, then you'll see if the image is grabed or entirely made by hand.

in the case of the firefox image, its made by hand :)

smartboyathome
December 2nd, 2007, 11:51 AM
Actually, it isn't made by hand. I just used a logo from gnome-look and tried to select nothing but the fox. ;)

I don't mean your hand per se, atleast someone did, but ungroup the fox logo and you will see dozens of separate vectors.

Nice job! Did you make the clubs/hearts/spades/diamonds?

nikoPSK
December 2nd, 2007, 08:10 PM
yes! I had to add some nodes to a triangle the bump if down and round it. For spades I turned the heart upside down the added a triangle as the stem. For clubs it was three spheres. For diamonds it was a square/ rectangle.

Are there any elements of Inkscape to be avoided or preferences to disable to keep it stable? From looking at the features and people's creations it's quite powerful, but I'll be damned if I can do more than drag out a couple of rectangles before it crashes without so much as a peep.

My setup is quite stable otherwise, and I've tried it on both Gnome and KDE desktops. It just really doesn't want to give me a chance. (I'd like to use it to do design mockups for my web sites)

smartboyathome
December 17th, 2007, 12:20 PM
No, there isn't anything that you need to avoid (at least, I haven't run into anything). The development version is even VERY stable. I would urge you to try that because it has some better features.

You have to make it as a separate path. make it similar to the origional version, but more slender.

It's pretty easy, actually (ssshhh, don't tell - you'll put graphic designers out of work! lol)

1. Create shape with main color;
2. Clone shape, make a few shades lighter, blur slightly, make smaller and place towards the bottom of the original shape (the glow).
3. Clone original shape again, make very light (or white), add gradient, squish to fit in top part of original shape (slightly smaller).

Attached is an SVG of the teardrop you can download and pick apart. :)

Brilliant, lad. Brilliant. Now here's my next query: how I do save the SVG so it's not the size of the document? I'm using Inkscape and it so far just makes the entire SVG image the size of the document I've got. Should I be using another app like Skencil or something?

Sorry - got busy there for a while. If I'm understanding you correctly, you want to change the dimensions of the drawing.

First, make sure that either everything you want in the boundary is selected, or nothing is.

Then: File > Document Properties > Fit Page to Selection

If I've mangled your question, post back! :)

I guess I got the Inkscape bug from seeing all your drawings and discussion. I've always been a GIMP user, but decided I'd better have a go at Inkscape. What a different world - new concepts, new buttons and methods... where to start getting decent at using this wonderful software.

I followed a tutorial I found on the Net and came up with this (not without a lot of trial and error as I kept looking for the familiar GIMP raster tools!)

Nice thread! Lots of skilled people here:) I myself is pretty new to Inkscape. So far I have made three vectors, and I'm very satisfied with my last one. The characters are from Naruto (Shippuuden), so bascially I didn't drew it myself, since I used two reference pictures. But still, I manage to draw it :D
Here's the last one, in three versions:

I actually don't know, but I found this on DeviantArt that was made the same as I did (so I guess it's legal):
http://leek128.deviantart.com/art/Naruto-and-Sasuke-vector-54921192

But I don't think ONE frame out of 33186 frames, redrawn in vector, edited so it's harder recognizable if you view the episode yourself, whick makes it not 100% copied, would make any infringement.

People redraw characters all the time, don't they?

I also wish it had an eraser. If it does, I have no clue how to use it. I am working on some original manga art right now and I have the skin exactly as I want it, but there is a glow from the blur I used to make light and shadows. I just want to wipe it away <sigh!>

Having been a strong user of Macromedia Fireworks, inkscape instantly presented a familiar enviroment to me...indeed it's shaping up to be a opensource version of fireworks.

Granted there are a few differences, mainly because fireworks (when i was using it back in 2000-2004) main purpose was for creating vector based graphics that would end up in 8bit bitmap form destined for a website.

As i mentioned earlier in this thread my avatar was made with inkscape, as you can see it's quite simple made up of around 12 shapes.

My only gripe with inkscape compared to fireworks is that when you start to get a large amount of shapes that contain lots of vertices, editing & navigating around the canvas becomes sluggish, even on my coreduo with an nvidia8800gt.

I also wish it had an eraser. If it does, I have no clue how to use it. It's a vector based editor, an eraser is for bitmap editors like gimp. if you want to peform erasing type actions on a shape:
1 - draw your desired 'eraser' shape and raise it above your target shape to modify.
2 - select both your target shape and your eraser
3 - choose from the Menus : Path -> Difference.

Your eraser will be destroyed in the act of punching through the target shape. Think of it as a custom shaped bullet.

The brush thing that Dannyramsnes maybe talking about is the modify path which behaves similar to a bitmap/photo editors 'smudge/smear' tool.

Recently decided to get back into graphics and website design, so I expect to churn out some more artwork/designs

Thanks for the tip! I can't wait to try this :)

One of my first creations! An attempt to make a picture of my laptop while loading Ubuntu! Everything was made by me, except for the Ubuntu logo! Let me know what you think!

How come?...I can see it just fine over here. You can check it out on my blog (link is in my signature) on the newest post, called: My Art!

lyceum (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=175779) you also have the option of using masks to contain things inside a custom shape rather than using a lossy approach that i described earlier.

The advantage of using masks is that the colour of your mask will affect the value of the colours contained in the shape or group of shapes being masked.

There is so much that is possible with inkscape, that I am still findout out new ways to do stuff.

Although i do wish it wouldn't become so sluggish after so few shapes and vertices, it really hampers my inspiration.

I see now, cool. :)

About masks:
I find clip+blur to be an excellent. With this, you can create gradients like Illustrator's gradient mask. :)

Hey, I made another one, completely from scratch. This one is my guitar...an ESP LTD EC-1000! I hope you guys like it!

It's a little rough around the edges though...this one is still under construction.

If you can't see it, just let me know!

Thanks a whole lot! I love Inkscape, and I'm just a noob, but I love learning. I made it look cartoon-ish because I like that kind of stuff. I hope I can learn how to use other effects to make my art look more realistic!

Well, I completely forgot about the knobs and pickup switch on the guitar...I fixed that now, and now it's complete! Although there are still some edges to file down...

Let me know if it looks good! (again)

i like these alot they are cool, but what is the difference between inkscape and gimp?

Gimp is a raster image editor (ie, you use colored pixels to create stuff). Inkscape is a vector graphics editor (ie, it generates equations and such which are used to generate shapes and such to make a picture). The former is limited to the size it was created, as if you try to make a raster image bigger, it gets pixelly, whereas the latter can be resized to any size without this loss of quality. The former also has more effects available to it, whereas the latter is more limited to what you can do with it.

For gimp: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/
For inkscape: http://www.inkscape.org/doc/index.php

This should get you started. Googling "gimp tutorial" or "inkscape tutorial" many more resources.
Good luck and have fun.

Hey, I just made another one!! This time i made Wall-e...I tried to make it as exact as possible like on my avatar, but I had to make the "Wall-E" logo on his belly by hand by making the letters out of rectangles and circles...I never found a fitting font.

Anyways, I hope you all like it! And please let me know what you think! I'm a noob at this inscape stuff...I'm still practicing...

So yeah, let me know if I need to fix something. Smartly enough i saved the svg's of Wall-e's different parts (legs, arms, head and body) just in case I need to scale or fix something on it.

There are groups if you want to do that. Just use control-g to group a bunch of selected paths and control-shift-g when a group is selected to ungroup the paths.

I like it, by the way. I would go off of this picture of wall-e (http://www.russellbeattie.com/blog/media/wall-e-poster1-big.jpg) if I were you. It shows his eyes being black not purple among other things.

That's the picture I used, I just tried to apply some purple blur like a lens effect and it ended up looking purple. And I know how to group parts. I just made every part of wall-e on a separate svg and then placed them together on the final picture. I'll fix his eyes now. Thanks for the tips!

Here, I fixed the eyes. I learned how to manage effects and gradients a little bit better. I hope this one looks better!

I used somewhat different colors because I want to make it my way...I want it to have the colors I want him to have. I never liked the yellow anyways...lol!

Thanks a lot smartboyathome! I'm loving this Inkscape stuff!

I'm working on another of m favorite characters as we speak...Stitch! It's very hard to get the shape right, but I'm trying to make it as good as possible!...I'll post it here when I'm done.

Thats all thats required. I did Tux V1 and V2 in Inkscape, and it was only approximately, not exactly, the same.

Here are two more svgs I made...I hope you guys like them! They're completely made from scratch like my previous drawings...

By the way, the iPod Classic.png is somewhat of a portrait of my own iPod Classic (160GB)...That's the menu layout and amount of songs I have on it.

Please do let me know what you guys think these and about Stitch (on the previous post)!

NOTE: I saved these drawings in .png because somehow the .svg format didn't show the gradients correctly on these particular drawings...I dunno what happened...
