View Full Version : Does anyone else think the Art Gallery is really impersonal?

The Art Gallery here is really well done and is a good idea. It looks nice, and provides an easy way to see screen shots. My issue is that its existence causes all "post your desktop" threads to be closed. These threads are usually very fun and let people ask each other questions about how they achieved certain looks and certain functionality. It encourages the kind of brainstorming and sharing that I think this community was supposed to be all about.
I am posting this as an open request to anyone who cares to let the forum now how you feel about the fact that we are denied this type of thread. I am not even the biggest eye-candy *****. I just like to comment on other peoples desktops once in a while, and there is no structured way of doing that in a friendly manner with the Art Gallery setup. I think "post your desktop" threads and the art gallery could easily co-exist as they provide mostly different functions.

I saw a "post your desktop" thread a minute ago... Was it locked?
I aggree. I like post your desktop threads. The art gallery is a little less personal. Its easier to comment on the boards.

In fact, it prompted me to post this thread.

I don't think 'post your desktop' threads should be closed. [-X Those are the best threads.

Actually, I think it's a good idea. It allows some people to upload their screen-shots easily without any extra hassle or registration.

There are alternatives of course: Gallery > Ubuntu Gnome Gallery, find theme/pic of interest, read description, private message user, and ask how he/she did it (especially if those instructions were not provided in the "description").
echo `diff OPpost altern` | wc -c ?

yeah thats possible, but a forum is more social.
Why not have a Art cafe forum within the gallery?

You ever actually try to follow any of those "screenshot" threads? They virate to 20+ pages of replies (and such). You have to dig, sort, and wade through many threads just to find any real substantial information (other than "cool", "wow!", "nice", etc).
At least by this (current) implementation, it's 1) much more organized, 2) you actually get substance from the "description" tags, and 3) it provides easy access to off site googler's.
I suppose the old system could still be implemented (in addition to the present one), however, then you're left with the old "sloppy" approach. What's so asocial about sending someone a 'pm' to talk about their screenies? The author can always link to his journal, blog, et cetera for further discussion. I like the current impelementation. It reminds me of entering an Art Museum, staring at all the perty little paintings with the Artists sig underneath...

I think we should allow "Post your desktop" threads. The art gallery really doesn't do it justice.

I like the gallery better, with the gallery I can browse the desktops that interest me and not click on some random link to a desktop that doesn't interest me. If the poster doesn't list the theme or something in their gallery post, I can leave a message or PM them.

I think the boards are much more casual. I have sent what... Like 5 PMs since I joined here? I have posted on the boards much more then that. A comment I might post on the boards about someones desktop I wouldent be bothered to send to them in a PM.

I like the show your desktop type threads 'cause then you get to see 40 people quote 20 screenshots in their posts then add a "nice" at the bottom. They're especially cool when they get up to ~60 pages in length!

I will put this to the Moderator group to see what they think .
Personally I like the idea of a monthly Desktop thread that is sticky for the month then locked at the end of the month and a new one stated

And I like those little cosy galleries.
There are other people hanging around with a glass of champagne, or beer.
And perhaps you chat to the artist too.
Try to do that with Van Gough!!!
On the other hand you don't want it to blow out with that cool wow stuff, but for that sort of comment there is the rating function in the gallery isn't it

Yes, sir. i believe so. I think you just click on the picture and drag down the rating button, and post a comment for further discussion (if necessary). I've sorted before with the Rank/View button as well. I really don't know how the current implementation could get any better. Oh well, I say puhtater. Others say potato...

I completly agree! With the gallery, I have been in contact with over 20 members over Pm or with E-mail, so there's also a social and a tech/help/howto perspective in the way as it is. Not to mention the ease of browse.
I found it very annoying with the old show-your desktop thread. To messy.
