My rig is pretty outdated, so I'm planning on ordering a new motherboard/processor/memory/video card from NewEgg.
This may be a newb like question, but what sort of issues will I run into after installing the new hardware? I currently have Gutsy running and it's a Pentium 4 with DDR 466 RAM. If I go from the 32-bit P4 to the 64-bit Core 2 processor and from DDR to DDR2, will I run into any issues with Gutsy? Especially the 32 to 64 bit... Will I need to do a fresh install or anything like that?
Side note, what 8 series Nvidia cards are you guys running well with Gutsy? I'd prefer the $150 range...

A week ago I switched out my P4 (Intel board) with a MSI board (AMD CPU) - had to reinsall http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ajgsz8nqvtv3_1782cfbnh

Is that typical? If I'm going from a P4 to Core 2 Duo, will I definitely have to reinstall?

In theory, both processors are able to run a generic i386 kernel. This is a massive change to the core component of the computer, though -- from one CPU to two, from 32-bits to 64, from x86 to IA64. I think it would be unwise to upgrade the processor without being completely prepared to reinstall, even if it turns out you don't need to.
Plus, why not get your money's worth and run the 64-bit OS?

Good point -- thanks.

P4 to C2D on same systemboard with same firmware should be okay but be prepared to reinstall ...
