I am experiencing acceleration issues within Ubuntu 7.10. My goal is to have no acceleration whatsoever, considering that I play games such as Quake 3 at a competitive level. :)

Inside games (where this really matters), when I move my mouse slowly, I can feel negative acceleration. When I move my mouse at a medium/high speed, I can feel positive acceleration. This greatly hinders my aiming ability and bothers me quite a bit.

P.S. I have researched, searched in google, and searched these forums without finding a solution. I have also used the Gnome Mouse Preferences, and found nothing else concerning this in the Configuration Editor. Thank you for your time.

Hmm, what mouse do you have? Have you looked if lomoco (http://lomoco.linux-gamers.net/) is something that can help you take full advantage of your mouse?

- linux (at least Ubuntu with GNOME) makes no mouse acceleration (the same named option is actually just a speed factor)
- Quake3 may very well have own built-in acceleration. See quake3 docs or forums.
- some mice have built-in (positive) acceleration, that can not be turned off

and lastly: I myself noticed negative acceleration on the GNOME desktop (the same HW under Windows has no such problems). I think it was 8.04 beta

It a mess
